Chapter 79 by Nelo

Who enters the room?

A blue-haired woman?

Into the office stepped a tall woman. She was in her mid-twenties, and had blue hair that stopped at shoulder-length. Her outfit was, well, rather revealing. Her admittedly curvaceous body was not at all obscured by the silken dress she wore, which opened only a little underneath her bust to expose her bellybutton, while also being completely exposing her back.

She wore some heavy makeup, but it only served to enhance her cool beauty and didn't seem tacky in any way. Naruto couldn't shake the feeling that he had seen her... but he couldn't connect a name with that face. Or this body, for that matter. "You're...", Naruto began, hoping the name would appear on the tip of his tongue once he started speaking. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Still, the woman acknowledged his presence with a slight bow on her part, a motion that was so graceful in its perfection it was giving him goosebumps. "It's been a few years now, hasn't it? Naruto-san...", the woman adressed him formally.

Naruto was still wondering where he had seen her, or rather, when. However, when he couldn't help but let his eyes wander over her, he noticed something. Around her bellybutton, she had four black piercings, and if he looked closely, she had one right underneath her lower lip as well... he had seen those piercings before!

On that guy who had attacked Konoha. Pein. He remembered the day, how he had followed the trail and encountered the real Pein. Yes, this woman had been by his side. In fact, she had given him the paper roses he still kept within his room, as a symbol of her trust. She had entrusted him with Pein's vision to lead the world into a peaceful era and assured Konoha Amegakures alliance. What was her name again...

But Tsunade appeared to be rather familiar with her. "That's a pretty nostalgic face, isn't it, Naruto? Takes me back to the days when Jiraiya, Orochimaru and me were still kicking butts together...", the Hokage said, apparently lost in memories for the moment. So, no help from her...

The woman looked at Naruto for a moment, a rather calm expression on her face. "It's Konan, in case you've forgotten.", she said simply, seeing how Naruto struggled to recall her name.

Right, Konan. He had heard her name before, although they had never been introduced to eath other formally. Now Naruto also knew why he hadn't instantly recognized: He only had seen her in her wide, Akatsuki-cloak that hid her body completely once. Her real figure was so breathtaking, it distracted him.

"And yes, it has been a very long time indeed, Hokage-san.", she said, turning to the Hokage and bowing again. "But, I have come because of Naruto-san. You may be wondering why I am showing up now, don't you? Allow me to explain...", the foreign woman from the country that was always cast in rain began.

She turned to Naruto now, her hands hanging at her sides. "You have accomplished what you have promised me on that day. You haven't disappointed the trust I put in you. I take it you still recall the flowers I gave you?", Konan inquired.

"Yup, I still have them.", Naruto nodded while saying this. It was the truth, he had made sure that they had been carried to his new home, where it now rested on a cupboard in his room, serving always as an reminder.

Konan nodded. "I'm glad to hear that. Indeed, things have improved vastly. Now, Amegakure is finally able to have its own government. The time where it needed someone to guide it is over. So, I took my leave from that place.", the woman began to explain.

"I felt it was time for me to finally stray from the path I thought I had to follow to the bitter end, the path of a ninja. That peaceful era that is about to begin has no need for ninja like me, thus I chose to leave this country behind and continue on this new path here.", Konan told them. Both Naruto and Tsunade were stunned. She intended to leave behind the ways of a shinobi behind her. Compared to what she was doing just a few years back, it was a nearly miraculous change. It would've been unthinkable even for herself if it hadn't been for Naruto.

So, the woman turned to said blonde and looked at him. "I would like to burden you again with my trust. But this time, I will see to it that it will only be a small burden, and in return, I promise to help and carry yours as well.". The words left her mouth, and even in her cold eyes, Naruto could see the warmth of her trust in him shine through.

"So, you're saying you want to...", Naruto asked, still a bit stumped by her intent. He knew he had come her to meet other potential wives, but seeing this woman among them surprised him. So, he needed confirmation just one more time.

And he got it. Again, Konan nodded. "Exactly. I wish to become your wife, Naruto-san. I wish to see the future you have created by your side and find my own place in it.", Konan voiced her hope for the future.

Naruto seemingly hesitated. She had expected this. Of course she couldn't show up out of nowhere and honestly expect Naruto to accept her plea. "That is to say, only if you agree to take me in. After what has happened, you of course have no obligations to do so, so I understand if you were to decline, Naruto-san.", she added.

But Naruto shook his head. "That's not really the problem here...", Naruto said slowly, trying to find the right words to express what was running through his mind at the moment.

"Then what IS your problem, brat?", Tsunade asked, getting seriously annoyed. For one, she still had other work to do. And second, how could he have a problem at all with accepting Konan? She knew the woman somewhat from the past and Jiraiyas tellings of their teaching. Also, she had been very polite during the few meetings they had regarding the politics of their nations, plus she was beautiful, she had to admit. So, how come the brat had a problem?

Naruto again struggled a little, but finally it seemed as if he had found the best way to put it into words now. "Well, shouldn't it be the other way around? Call me an idiot, but doesn't it feel sorta odd like this?", he explained himself.

Both Tsunade and Konan looked stunned. Tsunade especially looked slackjawed before regaining her composure. Then, she laughed for a moment and then looked at Naruto, her eyes changed somehow. "Wow, you're barely married for two weeks and I almost can't recognize you.", she marvelled. "Right, then go ahead and do what you must...", the Hokage leaned back in her chair and waved her hand at the two, motioning them to get on with it.

Taking it as his cue, Naruto turned to Konan and looked into her amber eyes. "So, uh... Konan-san, would you like to become my wife?", he asked her, formally like he thought it should be.

The blue-haired woman looked at Naruto for a while before answering. It was strange how little emotion he could detect on her face. He supposed she wasn't the kind of woman who wore her heart on her sleeve, but then something happened that surprised him. Konan smiled. It wasn't a big smile, just a faint one, but it was definitely there. "Yes, I'd like that, Naruto-san.", she replied.

Thus, it was decided. Not by Naruto, but by Konan. An outcome that she hadn't expected, but that made her all the more optimistic towards the future. After all, he had given her the courtesy of deciding for herself again. She was infinitely grateful to him already, and that gesture only deepened her gratitude towards him. And also, her affection for him.

Naruto grinned. He was happy to have found yet another person that was willing to put that much faith in him. He wouldn't let her down. Still, there was something still... "Hey, grandma? Is it really okay if Konan-san stays here in Konoha?", Naruto asked. He asked because he wasn't sure if Tsunade or anyone else would find an excuse to dig up her past with Akatsuki and how she had been involved in that catastrophic attack on Konoha back then.

Apparently, Tsunade had expected that question. "Well, she is not listed as a nuke-nin due to never even belonging to a Hidden Village. Also, she has been a friend of Konoha ever since, and even when she vacated her political position in Amegakure, she has come here out of her own free will. I'd say it's safe to assume she poses no threat."

He still didn't quite know what to make of her, she seemed so different that his other wives. Granted, they barely knew each other and there was a sense of affection he could feel from her, but he was used a morey 'touchy' approach from his other wives. Oh well, Rome wasn't build in a day either...

"Oi, Naruto, snap out of your daydreams, will ya? Seriously, I would've thought now that you're basically living out Jiraiya's dream, you wouldn't need them anymore...", Tsunade barked at him. Instantly, Naruto shaped up and gave Tsunade his full attention. "You're not done here yet, you know?", the Hokage warned him with a grin.

What's next in store for Naruto?
