What's he got?

Your new job.

Chapter 68 by Impregmaniac

When the press conference is finished, Djal bundles you through another portal, and you find yourself in a storage cupboard somewhere. Poking his head out through the door, Djal tells you to make yourself look more presentable. When you ask what he meant by that, he groans and says, "Black trousers, jacket, shoes, and tie. White shirt, sock, and this lapel button." He flips you something and you manage to catch it.

"Where are we?" you ask looking at the button, recognizing the Prime Minister's seal on it.

"Parliament," is the grumbled reply. Pulling his head back in, he shakes it at you. "Get changed. She'll be arriving soon, and you need to be ready for her." You open your mouth to speak, but he glares at you and you feel a weight of a planet bear down on you. "Change." Pulling up a mirror from the floor, you start messing around with your clothes, to Djal's specifications. After a couple of adjustments, he's satisfied enough that he allows you out of the closet. "Good. Grab that case and follow me. Keep your eyes forwards and your mouth shut."

Doing exactly that, you wind your way past admin staff and other ministers. But you do catch a few hushed conversations as to who you might be and from which department you serve. "Shut up. They don't know anything," Djal orders, sensing your concern. "The more time they spend wondering, the more time you have to get away from them." You try to swallow as quietly, and walk as smoothly as you can, but you do walk a half-pace faster.

Eventually, you find yourself directly in front of the Prime Minister's office. "Can I help you?" what you assume to be the secretary asks you.

"Afternoon," Djal says to them, in what you presume to be a human form, making the secretary jump in their seat. "Sorry about that. He's the Prime Minister's new Aide-de-camp."

"'Aide-de-camp'?" the secretary replies, scratching their head and rifling through some papers. "I don't remember anything about an aide-de-camp. When was that organized?"

Behind his back, Djal wiggles his fingers, and an official looking document appears in his hand. Handing it over to the secretary, he says, "About two weeks ago. You weren't informed?"

"I should have been. I'm her PA. This was supposed to go through me first," they mutter, scanning the papers. A few tense moments pass quietly before they sigh and shake their head. Looking at the clock, they let out a long breath. "I need to look into this, but the Prime Minister will be back in about five minutes..." They drum their fingers on the desk, and to your surprise, Djal actually offers that you both can come back another time.

"No," the PA says, "on the small chance that I missed an email or something, I'd rather the Prime Minister have her new aide-de-camp that she's expecting, rather than be kept waiting. Go on through," they motion with their head to the door before holding the document back out to Djal, "but you're going to have to help me to find this. What did you say your name was again?"

Djal smiles and starts feeding them lines of lies, waving for you to get a move on.
