Chapter 34 by tailteller

Is Sally stupid?

Yes, but they're lucky

Aurora heard all of the conversing going on outside. Pretend to be human, she thought. It finally made sense. There were people looking for her, so they tried to hide her like this. It didn't feel right..and it would almost certainly backfire. Her gut felt like someone digging around for her organs. Then she felt it. The unique heat in the air that only ever came from another Nova. Maybe if she could keep calm...

<...Sister?> Her eyes shot open. Her little brother stared back, speaking in a hushed whisper. Happiness and confusion danced across his face. <It is you...why are you dressed so...stupidly?>

She closed her eyes and sighed. At least it was her brother. <It's a long...long story. One that would hurt to tell.>

<How long have you been their prisoner?>

She felt the panic crawl across her skin, but it didn't show. <I am not! They rescued me.>

He gave an incredulous look, confusion and caution on his brow. <Rescued you? By taking your hydration suit, and covering your heart?>

<They must have been expecting a human to be looking for me.>

He grabbed her arm and stood. <Well, they were wrong. Time to go home.>

She grabbed his arm back, and pulled him back down to her level. <Wait!> She whispered harshly. <I don't want to, yet...he's really trying to help me. He's...kinda cute, too.>

<What?! You want to...stay?>

She smiled, and peeled off one of the pads on her arm. The happiness in her finally touched the air.

<With him.>

<Yes! I like it here, and I think I can learn to speak to them! Isn't there something that can be done?>

<I...will have to tell the Alpha...but I will share this heart with him...I don't know what will happen after that.>

Aurora touched her hand to his head. The night of her rescue lived through both of them. The terror she felt, though she skipped the reason for it, and the dull blackened world whirling as she was lifted and carried to water. His eagerness to show peace however he could. The curiosity and strangely intense comfort she felt with him. <I wish to stay...>

He sighed. <I...will show the Alpha...but it will be days before he can speak with the Elders. In the meantime, don't get caught...who knows what these hairy pink barbarians will do? But...I will try my best.>

<Then I know nothing but good will happen. You're too smart to fail, when you put your mind to it.>

He let go and stood, rubbing at his head gently. Stress crawled down his arms and neck. <Just don't expect much, okay? I'm good with machines, but unless they'll let me give myself some treatments I'm just...me.>

<Whatever happens...thank you.>

He flickered with affirmation and moved into the hallway, focusing on his sister being safe. It allowed him to show peace to the law enforcement humans. Knowing they would dismiss anything he tried to say, he addressed his sister before leaving the doorway. <Try to learn quickly...you'll need it.>

Are they convinced?
