Spike's "Owner"

You follow Spike’s gaze and turn around. Now in front of you on the other side of the kennel door stands a pair of legs, long legs. You look up to see they belong to a woman, a beautiful woman.

“Well, I was worried you missed me, but it looks like you got yourself a little girlfriend.” She says as she kneels down to be face to face with Spike. Spike lets out a light bark, it’s in a tone you haven’t heard from him before, it seems happy. The woman turns back over to you and gives a warm yet somehow slightly unsettling smile.

“Have you been keeping my boy here happy?” She asks you playfully.

Before you can figure out how to respond, Adam walks up, a ring of keys in his hand.

“Alright Spike, time for you to go home.”

Spike excitedly backs up, giving Adam space to open the door. Once open Adam attaches a leash to his collar and guides him out of the cage. He quickly shuts the door as if you had been prepared to run out after him.

The woman starts to pet Spike as he rubs up against her her but his gaze starts going back to you. The woman must have noticed this because she’s soon looking at you as well.

“You must have really left an impression on him.” She says as she looks back at Spike, who’s eyes are still fixed on you. “I normally get his full attention.” She lightly tugs on the leash and Spike quickly turns to face her. She pats him on the head and then signals Adam.

“I’ll need to get the contact info for her owner so we can schedule a play date.”

“Oh, Candy here is a stray” Adam says glaring at you. “but she’ll be here for your next visit.”

The woman leans back down and reaches her hand through the kennel gate, lightly petting your face.

“Hi Candy, my name’s Jennifer.” You’re not sure how to react so you just accept the petting, after all it does feel kind of nice.

She looks back at Adam while still stroking your face. “I’ll take her!”

You hear the words but their meaning doesn’t sink in.

“She’s new, not trained yet.” Adam says.

Jennifer lets out a laugh. “Oh, training isn’t a problem. You’re not really going to take all the credit for training Spike here are you?”

Adam lets out a nervous chuckle as he pulls his keys back out.

“Fine, why not?” Adam begins to unlock the door again.

The meaning of all the words finally hit you. This can’t really be happening, can it? She can’t just take you, can she? You start to panic as the door opens. You could run, you could at least talk and object, but the real question is, do you want to?
