Chapter 19 by wixxy wixxy

Looks clear. What happens?

Venture inside.

You quietly make a plan with Todd. Handing him the keys, you ready the shotgun so that you can cover him while he tries the various options in the door. With a whispered Three, Two, One you each spring forward and sprint across the street and to the front entrance of the station.

Todd attempts to look small against the door, which isn't going to work but at least he's trying. You've taking up a more concealed position behind the country sheriff's badge sign to the front of the entrance. Your heart is pounding as you strain to listen for anything out of the ordinary.

This is taking ages. There are more than twenty keys on the ring, but you'd hope that Todd can tell the difference between a locker key and a high security front door key. You hear him drop the bunch a couple of times, nerves probably overwhelming him too, and you whisper across to him.

"Just take your time, chill. I know it's scary but we'll be quicker if we just take it easy."

"Sorry Alana," he mumbles, trying to calm down.

Eventually you hear the click of the security bolts disengaging and the heavy-framed glass door swings open. As you hustle through, you notice that the security glass has got numerous dents and chips in it where people have tried to **** their way in.

"Thank fuck it's properly secured," you breathe, as you close the door behind you and turn the bolt from the inside. "Ok, we're not going to stay here for long. A place like this must be of interest to lots of people with ideas like us, and we don't want anyone to know that we were here. So, armory. That's the main thing we're looking for."

Todd nods, trying to look casual as he clutches his pistol. At least it's pointing down like you taught him

You move through the building, peeking round office doors on your way to the armoury deep inside. Still no signs of life anywhere. Most of the rooms look exactly as they would have been left at the end of a normal day. You knew from your dad's behaviour during the virus that law enforcement had attempted to keep things ticking over, providing reassurance and certainty to the community, until one day it simply hadn't been possible, and they had failed to show up to work in any appreciable numbers. It was highly likely, you realised, that dad was the last person to be in this building.

Arriving at the armory door, you quickly check over the locks. It has three chunky bolt locks that are key operated. There is a keypad to the side, which no longer has any power, so you guess that the locks are there as a backup for just such an eventuality.

Resuming your covering position from before, you wave for Todd to get started with the keys.

What happens next?
