Chapter 40

Let them work...
And let them be.
Throughout the rest of the morning, you poke around the area with Flora, building your trust and relationship with her. You also talk to Alexandra, but she doesn’t seem too interested in getting to know you. Probably because she’s the designated runner, there’s not much time for her to get to know very many of the team members. She’s kind enough, but you can tell there’s some morbid reasoning for her to be here. She isn’t nearly as kind-hearted as Flora.
You talk to Kenji briefly too. He’s level headed, which calms and drags the others together. You are sure without him guiding the team there wouldn’t much to look at. You ropes you in a conversation as he packs and makes a list of their gear. Scarlet interjects herself into the conversation you both are having. She’s laying her best “fuck-me” eyes on Kenji, who either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care. His eyes approach her with a much more mature and caring expression.
By the time they are gone, it’s almost noon. This leaves you alone with Flora for pretty much the rest of the day. You are given strict orders to stay below while they are gone. You are free to explore freely at night, as long as it doesn’t involve direct contact or confrontation with any of the locals from Billings...or any of the locals in general.
This basically gives you at least 5 hours of time alone. Flora pulls out a book not even a minute into isolation and reads herself into a daydream. You fieldstrip and clean your guns, but your routine care of them proves to be fatal as you realize there’s nothing else for you to do besides pick at the wall.
Every so often, as you tinker with your rifle, you look at Flora, who’s amber eyes glide along the words on her yellow-paged book. She looks up at notices staring at her, she doesn’t say anything at first, but when she catches you the second time, she places the book on her lap and asks why you are looking at her.
Truth to be told, the whole experience with the succubus is making you think more about the demon than her actual self. If you told her that though, you’re sure the backlash would make the whole situation awkward.
Your mind brews up a quick response for you to use. It’s the only thing you can think of. “You look really nice today for some reason.”
Some air escapes her nose at your comment. “Ahh, OK. Thanks.”
If you were to stop talking now, an awkward silence would be made. You stand up and approach her, making her eyes stay on yours. “What book are you reading?”
“Uhm,” she looks down on the cover and gestures to the front. “Watership Down. Have you read it before?”
You look at the book and tilt your head somewhat, letting your brain work it's archives.
Yes or no?
