Chapter 5 by snovise snovise

Where does he go?

Gene23's research facility.

The 20-something minute drive to the facility on the edge of the city was nerve-wracking for Zac. He was shuddering by the time he arrived. Subconsciously, he knew that any organization which would restrict their subjects' orgasms was probably not to be trusted, but he kept repeating to his self that they wouldn't legally be able to exist if they weren't minimally trustworthy.

He had no trouble finding a parking space, because the lot was almost empty, aside from the spaces reserved for employees. The building looked like a museum, with its stark white exterior and sleek, modern architecture. Toward the front there were glass windows everywhere, which suddenly stopped toward the back. Zac wasn't sure why, but this distressed him.

The trembling young man walked into the lobby and approached the receptionist, a cheerful-looking woman who was probably in her late thirties.

As he was about to speak, she said, "You must be Zac. Am I right? Tell me I'm right."

He nodded, confused by her tone.

"Got it! I'm a psychic, see?" Zac raised an eyebrow.

The receptionist chortled, "No, I'm just joshing you. You're the only appointment we have this morning."

"Really?" he replied, legitimately intrigued.

"Yep. You have some very special genes, kiddo. We don't even approve 1% of applicants. I think there's probably under a hundred people getting the GES right now in the whole country. More than fifty, probably, but less than a hundred."

Her demeanor was very soothing to Zac, and he'd lost most of his apprehension. He decided to pop the question immediately. "This is kind of awkward to say, but I, uh, didn't really read the terms before I signed the contract. I was wondering if there was any way I could get out of it."

"No," she replied, uncharacteristically short. A moment passed before she continued.

"No, nope, no way. I'm really sorry that you didn't read it, but almost everybody asks and my bosses say no. I'd love to help, but no."

Zac was wondering what kind of meds she was on at this point and decided to ask someone else later. "Okay, then I guess I'm rea-'"

He was cut off, "And you're probably thinking, 'Oh, I'll just ask someone else.' You're not going to get another answer. Scenario 2 if you're too persistent and Scenario 2 or 3 -I've seen both- if you try to, for example, leave the country." She'd jumped back to her second tone.

"O-okay." He knew what the Scenarios meant and didn't want to risk either.

She got up from her desk. "I'll take you to your room."

Does he follow her?
