Chapter 23 by ThomasMoro

What happens next?

So what happened to Yosemite Tam?

An hour or so earlier:

Yosemite Tam was curious about the mysterious woman who called herself Jane Harker and she got even more curious when she tried so hard to run away from Renfield that she tore her dress off. Since Yosemite rarely passed up an opportunity to investigate a naked woman when she was on her home territory, she ran after Miss Harker, only to notice that Renfield was already running after her.

She stopped to watch their interaction from a distance, then noted how Jane managed to trick the wolf that Renfield had been determined to sic on her. For a while, Yosemite was afraid that he might have to shoot the animal but since Jane managed to trick it into letting her pass by, that seemed totally unnecessary.

Then Yosemite noticed Jane climbing over the wall of the Dracula estate with Renfield close behind. Yosemite frowned at the idea of Renfield catching up with Jane. She did not know much about him but from what she had observed so far, it seemed obvious that he was up to no good. Besides if one person had to be running after a naked Jane Harker, Yosemite preferred that it be her, not this mysterious Renfield fellow.

So Yosemite hurriedly climbed up the wall after Jane and Renfield, only to hear a loud ripping sound as she leapt over the top and landed in a convenient haystack. Then she looked up and saw her trousers still on the top of the wall. Then Yosemite looked down and realized that she was now wearing nothing but boots and long johns below the waist.

No matter. She had worn far less when swimming in the wilderness back home though it did seem a bit awkward to be so underdressed in this type of posh locale.

Then Yosemite spied Renfield still running in the direction Jane must have been headed in and realized that she still had a job to do. So ignoring her embarrassment, she hurriedly ran after Renfield, finally managing to tackle him just a few feet before he reached the house. Then she got out some rope and tied him up so that he could do no more harm.

Yosemite looked around for Jane and saw nobody but a maid sweeping the back porch. The maid had a black scarf around her neck and she looked a bit like the one that had answered the front door of the Westenra house earlier that day.

No matter. Even if she did not know where Jane went, she would at least be able to provide Yosemite with some decent clothes.

"Excuse me," said Yosemite. "but I appear to have torn my clothes leaping over the wall. I don't suppose you could provide with some replacement clothing till I get a chance to buy some replacements."

"Naturally, Miss," said the maid.

The maid spoke with an Irish accent and as she led Yosemite into the house, it seemed obvious that she was the same maid Yosemite had spoke with earlier. However, something about the black scarf she was wearing bothered Yosemite even more right then than it had earlier in the day. Could the maid be hiding something? And if so, what? A bite mark?

Yosemite didn't think that Count Dracula would stoop so low as to bite a maid but then again maybe it was not Count Dracula who bit her. And if so, that meant there was another vampire around -- if not someone in the process of turning into a vampire. Perhaps she should have ignored Professor Van Helsing and gone ahead with the test on the scantily dressed woman she had spoke with earlier. Speaking of which...

Yosemite reached into her vest pocket for her cross and muttered a quick prayer. The Irish maid was able to stand out in the daylight so it was unlikely that she was a full-fledged vamp but it would not be a bad idea for Yosemite to test her all the same. And if she really had been bitten by a vampire, well, it was a good thing that Yosemite had a stake in her vest pocket as well...

Or so Yosemite thought until she looked up and noticed that she was surrounded by an army of maids, each and every one wearing a black scarf around her neck.

Then she heard the Irish maid behind her scream, "Strip her!" and then suddenly the crowd of maids were on her so fast that it mattered little what Yosemite had in her pockets. There was just no way that the maids would permit her to reach her weapons in time.

What happens next?
