There was a yell from one of the overhead gunships, "NO!" Even as the Swarm went to bury squad XJ-9 and the Rangerettes. "Danger close! Danger close!" 'Patty', the leader of Knife-Light Seven would yell.

"Abort run!" Came the command from Colonel 'Scarlett'.

Patty would snap back, "I can get them! I can get them!"

The Colonel's reply was sharp. "And kill everyone in the squad and the rescue group /and/ collapse the hole they just went into and deny us pursuit. Stand DOWN."

"..." Patty would smash her fist over to the console, even as the co-pilot gave her a look of raw pain before going to answer, "This is Knife One, acknowledge. Returning to sweep."

Scarlett's voice came in. "Don't worry Knife Flight, we'll get our girls back. We know that the Xenos are using the Grotlings as scouts. Sweep ahead and use sonar to check underground. Then blast anything that you pick up."

Patty would take a few moments and close her eyes. "Acknowledged, command. Knife Flight, spread out." The three fighters of the flight would zoom around like rotor-copters of the days of old.

Chastity (called because in no way, shape, or form was she) in the gunner's seat would call out, "Getting some minor anomalies inconsistent with detonations."

Patty would call, "Knife Flight One to Two and Three. Concentrate fire on area, set plasma for burrowing and underground detonation."

From several dozen meters up, the three gunships would all lock their wings 'downward' as the wingtip plasma cannons would twist down. Then they would start blasting rapidfire. There would be howls from underneath. The co-pilot of Knife One would whoop, "Cooked 'em alive! Take that Bugs!"
