Lacy drove back to the police station. Her "guests" we're talking the whole time about how promising this lead had been, and how they had nothing to go on. She'd let them think that. Everyone they spoke to, except the nurses, had definitely been trying to hide something.
These two still were. But what? She let them talk each other out of following up on this. Once they were back in their own car, and Alan rejoined her, she had to ask for his input. After she went over all of her notes, and the bit of info she hadn't written down, she set her notepad on the dashboard. "So. Think I'm paranoid?"
Alan shook his head, removing his hat and scratching into his ginger hair. "No, Lace. No, I don't this whole thing feels off. I heard the chief didn't ask their whole group for I.D. either. Just one or two and let them all come through."
"You don't think the chief is in someone's pocket, do you?"
"God, no...but he is getting old."
"Watch it."
"Hey, I still respect the hell outta the guy but maybe it's time for him to retire, you know?"
"Alan."
He paused. "Well. Anyways, no I don't think you're paranoid. Those two felt off to you, suree. Did you get a chance to talk to the guy they're all into?"
"James? No, chief gave their group clearance to ask the first questions so I stuck in the road waiting. He said they'd know best what signs to look for to find the Nova."
"Maybe we should do that sometime."
"Not on the schedule, Al. We're not detectives, we don't have permission to visit without orders."
"Not in our on time, anyway."
"What, you think he'd just let us in in our street clothes to badger him and get a feel?"
He shrugged. "He let squat and scrawny in, didn't he? Worth a shot. We just let him know we're off duty and following up on a possible lead."
Lacy sighed, rubbing her temples. "Idunno, Alan...it's a risky move."
"You said yourself those two are off. What if they're targeting him for something?"
She stared forward and thought for a moment. "Dammit, how do you always convince me into shit...alright, but only after shift. Nothing that could come back and bite us."
