The nature of the mission changes
"You did WHAT!" Gabrielle shouted, seeing you and your new friend in your room, unable to grasp the recent events
"I found the princess, and rescued her" You say in an oddly nonchalant manner
"So you claim. What is your proof!? How did you find her? What are you not telling me!?" Understandably, she feared you had done something disastrous to find the princess, and she isn't entirely wrong.
"Look at her" You reply defensively, both of your hands gesticulating in her direction "She has golden eyes, it was said only the Royal Family had that trait. She was held prisoner by the Regent, which corroborates the Bishop's premonition."
Gabrielle stepped close to the princess, looking her over "That may not be as rare as you think Michael, although I recognize this makes some amount of sense..." Staring eye to eye, the paladin actually addresses the princess "I'm terribly sorry, for having an argument around you, about you, and not even recognizing that you're in the room. My name is Gabrielle Lernow. Michael and I were sent by someone important to come find you. What's your name?"
"Vercion" The supposed princess still looked very scared, despite being in a safer place "Vercion Hajjat"
"Well met, Miss Hajjat" Gabrielle smiles as she offers a small handshake "so, how did Michael rescue from the scumbag regent?"
"I drove a dagger through him" You answer for Vercion. Gabrielle, enraged, spins around to look at you, her barely tempered raged brought back to the surface
"What in the name of the Gods possessed you to do such a thing! On top of treason, you chose to add an attempted coup to our crimes"
You raise your temper in kind, defending your position "He was trying to **** her, again! What would you have done?"
Gabrielle pauses at the implication, giving the question a serious moment "I would have done the exact same thing, in all fairness. You did the right thing, but I'm afraid this just made the matters more complicated..." Gabrielle turned back to look at Vercion again, seeing her in a random assortment of frumpy clothing that doesn't really fit her, or match. "Where did she get the clothing from, Michael?"
"I robbed a store...Rather, I paid a street urchin to rob a store for me." Gabrielle's hands raised over her face and combed through her blonde hair in frustration
"Fine! Any other crimes you've committed today that I need to be aware of?" You shake your head no, and Gabrielle begins to calm down.
"For what it's worth, I believe Michael is correct." Looking at Vercion "You're a lost princess of Agito, and we've come to help you, and put things right after a century of wrongs."
Vercion no longer looked scared, but incredibly confused, bordering on defiant "Wait, what? No, that's impossible. I couldn't possibly be a...princess"
"Why not?" You ask, curious as to her protest
"Princesses don't rummage on the streets. They live in a palace and go to balls, they know how to read and write" You can see reflecting on her life is making Vercion emotional, and you try to get ahead of it, approaching her closely.
"Hey, don't worry. Everything that you had to deal with is over now. Your kingdom was taken over by the Emperor a century ago. They tried to kill your entire family, but someone managed to escape, and that's how and why you're alive. We just need to figure out who your parents are to tie you to the Royal Family, and figure out the next step."
"That...could prove more difficult than you think" Gabrielle posited "Assuming they didn't burn them, any records of the line of succession would have been taken to the Codex, the great library in the Imperial City. I am not bringing her into the wolves den."
"The wolves don't know she exists" You counter "If that's where they are, than that's what we have to do"
"If they haven't figured it out, they surely will soon. The regent may have been an utter dolt but we can't trust in incompetence for long."
"We have no other choice" You refute "That or go into the castle itself and rummage through the debris hoping that something's still there."
"That's not the only choice." Gabrielle argued back, her temper seemingly ever present "People here might know who she is. Even if they don't know she's a princess, we can try to associate the family tree that way. Or at least, we would be able to do that, if you didn't kill the Regent and cause every Orkuzian guard to be on high alert. It won't take long before they start blaming the refugees here for what you did."
"So we rely on hearsay from peasants? Nobody will believe that! It's no more grounded than relying on her eyes alone..."
"If I may" Fizzlewig spoke up, having been a quiet observer this whole time "There's another, more unconventional way to prove who she is." All heads pivot to look at him
"What are you talking about Fizzlewig? What other way?"
"The Archive of Lost Dreams" He responds, trying to muster all the majesty in his diminutive voice to grant to the name "A mythical place. It is exactly what it sounds like, a place where the dreams of every person in this world go to after they wake up from their sleep."
"But...that's impossible, isn't it?" The princess asks "I mean, dreams are just the imagination gone mad while you rest, they can't be physical objects...can they?"
"My dear princess, nothing is impossible! We can absolutely prove that you're of noble line there. We just have to find it!"
"Fizzlewig" You ask, pensively "This place, it actually exists right? You know how to get there, yes?"
"Oh, nobody knows how to get there" The halfling wizard stated "But it absolutely exists. We just have to be the ones to figure out how to find it. Won't that be an adventure!"
