Birthday present

"Well then," the businesswoman says, looking at Morgan. "Give your brother his present."

Morgan looks befuddled. "Mom, I just told you I didn't get him anything."

"No, you said Scarlett is his present."

"Yeah. I mean, her company is his present- I mean, not like her 'company,' but her presence is the present. He's been ogling her all dinner," Morgan says.

"No, I told you to get him a present and you agreed to. So, 1 way or the other, give him a present right now. It can either be Scarlett, or... you."

Morgan and Scarlett exchange alarmed looks before turning back to the businesswoman, who continues to wear a stern look on her face. Both young women seem to be scared of her. Morgan likely because all her money and credit cards depend on her mother, while it seems like the businesswoman is very close with Scarlett's mother. This is turning out to be quite some evening and you've almost forgotten about the reason why you came here and instead you're just enjoying being a spectator to some other people's complicated lives.

You would have thought Scarlett would have vocally protested by now, but she just sits there next to Morgan, looking pleadingly at her friend. Morgan bites her lower lip as she considers what to do, until eventually the businesswoman loses her patience and says, "Well? What will it be?"
