Chapter 11 by tantrikenetic

What do you say?

Of course not.

You give her a long look. The tears stains on her cheek and the quiver in her lips only catch your attention for a second before you focus on her emerald eyes. They were shining from the tears and dancing with fear and sadness. She doesn't give you this look often and you can easily sense how upset she is. You sigh and turn away from her, walking over to your dresser.

"Of course not. Don't be an idiot, Melody." You say, undoing the strap to your watch and placing it on the dresser. "We've been best friends for seven years, and we've pissed each other off plenty of times in that span. This is no different. Don't be so melodramatic."

"Sooo..." Melody said softly, her voice cracking. She stared down at her lap and twisted the hem of her shirt around in her hands. "Does that mean...you forgive me?"

You stop what you're doing and look over your shoulder. "No." You see her face fall as the hope your previous words gave her vanished into thin air. "Not yet, anyway. I'm still ticked off at you. And it wouldn't be fair to either of us if I forgive you before I can get over it."

"Oh." Was all she said. "I-I understand."

"Good." You reply. You feel awful, because you know Melody's heart has been beaten to a pulp twice in one night by the two guys she's closest to. But your words were true. You can't forgive her until you're no longer angry. Which shouldn't be too long; your ego is already starting to mend itself seeing how sorry Melody obviously is.

"Would it...would it help if I said I was really, really, really sorry?" She asks in an apologetic tone, looking up at you.

"It's a start." You say with a half-smile. It was only there a split second, but you could see some relief enter Melody's expression. She lets out a held breath.

"I don't deserve a friend like you." She says, looking back down.

"What did I say about melodrama?" You look back at your dresser. "You screwed up, but who doesn't? This isn't the first time and it won't be the last. It's not the end of the world."

"I...I'd do anything to make it up to you Jack." She whispers.

"We'll talk about it tomorrow." You reply.

"Do...do you want me to get naked?" She asks weakly. Your freeze in place and look back at her in confusion. "You can...you can point and laugh at me. You can call me names and humiliate me. That way...we'd be even." She must have seen the agahst look on your face because she rambles on. "I wouldn't hold it against you. I'd deserve to be humiliated after what I put you through."

"Oh, come on Melody!" You sigh. "I don't want that. Breaking your self-esteem won't help me recover mine any. Besides, it looks like your ego isn't exactly in any better shape than mine right now."

"Hmm." Melody mumbles, looking away.

"Get some rest. We can sort this out in the morning. My head hurts too much to get into it now." You unbutton your jeans and you're about to drop them to the floor when you freeze. You used to do this all the time with Melody around, just chilling in your boxers. But now you feel...awkward. "Could you turn around?" You ask her, trying to stay polite. "I don't want you watching me."

The hurt look in her eyes said it all. "Of c-course." She says unsteadily. She turns around, and you take your pants and socks off, then crawl into your bed. "All right. See you in the morning." You say, turning away from her to face the wall.

"Y-yeah." Melody says sadly. "G'night." It's silent for a little while longer, then you hear a whisper close by your ear. "I'm really sorry." And then there was the soft squeaking of Melody getting into bed and you finally drift off to sleep.

What does morning hold?
