Chapter 23 by strigiforme

Where do we go from here?

The less said, the better

I decided to get a drink and let this whole thing end. With a little wave, I walked off into the crowd and vanished. Once I was immersed in the crowd I looked back, seeing him still glued to the wall and with his phone out no doubt texting all his friends about what just happened. well, let him brag about it, he didn't know me or have any pictures and he'd probably write it up as a crazy one time thing. I waded through the volumes of people back to the private bar. More than half of the people who had come with us were now gone, leaving the bar fairly empty. I dropped myself into a chair, suddenly and inexplicably tired. I got a red bull and vodka and a water, and asked the bartender the time. It was just 1 now, and the bar wouldn't be closing until 3. I didn't have my phone, but I could get a taxi back home anytime with the credit card tucked into a teensy-tiny pocket the dress had. I sipped on my drink, surveying the room and chatting briefly with one of Casey's friends who sat next to me while she ordered drinks.

She was soon replaced with a pair of guys who wandered in. It seemed that we only had the bar rented until 1 so it was now open for everyone, and people were trickling in as they realized it was open. The taller of the two ordered three tequila and orange juices, passing one to me.

"What's your name?" He was fairly tall, at least a head and a half above me, and obviously athletic. He looked friendly enough, with short hair and a light dusting of stubble. "I'm Jack."

"I'm Evan." Jack's friend was a hair shorter, with very pale skin and longer black hair and thickly rimmed hipster glasses. If Jack was the athletic one, Evan looked more like he belonged in some kind of band or painting studio. The both of them seemed normal enough, odds being that they were students at the same college as me out for a night on the town at a bar like this.

"I'm Emily," I replied, smiling, "Thanks for the drink?" I asked as Evan slid one to me.

"No problem. I'm pretty sure we were both in the same dorm last year, Joshua Hall right?"

"Yeah, I was in Josh. Do you just remember everyone you see or what?"

"Nah, just the pretty ones," Evan said with a little chuckle, taking a sip.

"What major are you?" Jack asked, leaning over the bar a little. They were both to one side of me, the other occupied by a loud squad of girls working on editing their pictures from the night. "I'm political science, but I'm probably gonna switch out."

"Chem E," Evan let out a little whistle in mock-awe, while Jack made an exaggerated face of shock. Chemical Engineering was known to be not only one of the hardest majors we offered, but also one of the most male dominated; there were maybe four other girls in my major, outnumbered by the 250 or so guys.

"I think we just met a unicorn," Evan said to Jack before waving over the bartender and ordering two more drinks. He looked at me expectantly and I asked for a vodka cranberry.

"Yeah, a Chem E girl, and a pretty one? Emily, you're one of a kind."

We chatted for a while, talking about school and the dorm we had both been in last year. The guys were here to celebrate Jack getting into his first internship, which was a big deal for a sophomore. Evan, his best friend, had originally planned to take him to a bar closer to campus but realized Jack had no fake; fortunately, they didn't care here. Our talking started out pretty innocent, but they weren't too shy to throw in a few flirty remarks throughout. Having two guys fawn over me was a nice experience, especially when it came with free drinks. Before too long it was 2:30 and last call was made, so we finished our drinks. They lived in a house a few blocks from my dorm, so they offered to split paying for a ride back. I could probably still try to find Casey, but she might have already left with a guy. Or, I could get my own ride back and just pay the extra few dollars for a private ride back.

How do I get home?
