Chapter 3

Get on with it!
<all> Get on with it!!
So here I am. Standing in front of my great steam-powered clockwork mechanism. It was no small feat to build, costing both time and precious resources along with nearly all my gold reserves. I sigh, thinking for a moment. I think of Krynn. Nothing is here for me anymore, except young mages who wish my ****.
A hiss of steam escapes the vent. It's time. I step into a small cage, much like you'd place a bird, and throw the lever. The cage rises as I feel my heart beat faster. A satisfying click is heard as the gears of my cage lock into the clock, and I begin to slowly rotate clockwise.
"Here we go", I think to myself as I their another lever. A chute opens, gravity feeding more coal into the massive burner. I wait and watch the pressure gauge building up towards the red line. In going to need all the power I can get if I'm going to beat the clock. Steam hisses and fills my house. A creaking. A groaning. A shrill train-like whistle as I pull the final lever to engage the main drive piston.
The entire clock I'm encased in groans as the pressure of the steam piston pushes back against time itself. A terrible shake and wooden creaking as the clock grinds to a stop. I quickly point towards my main spell crystal and utter, 'paghz'.
The crystal flares to life and begins draining. The metal creaks louder, followed by a clang. I start moving backwards. Impossibly backwards. The second magic fires without a hitch, followed by the third....
I'm moving impossibly fast. An explosion is heard, followed by what must be the support strusses. As the clock face falls down upon my cage, the world stops. A thin vertical line that shouldn't be there splits my vision, sitting relatively close to the top.
The bottom third of the frame drifts impossibly further to the left of what should be there. It defies explanation. Colors begin to blur in what can only be explained as corruption. Pure corruption.
I think I broke it...
