Chapter 20

Does life get any better than this?
Bliss and then the real world again.
Darcie found she could barely muster the energy to turn herself over. When she did, she found Spencer looking at her with the most self-satisfied look she had seen.
“Happy?” she asked knowing what the answer would be anyway.
“That… was… incredible?” Spencer told her. His voice rising at the end like a question as if he had temporarily forgotten the meaning of some words it was so damn good.
As he drew in close to hug her, Darcie was able with the help from Spencer to roll onto her side so they could spoon together in their post-orgasmic glow. Her hair was wet and clammy and stuck to her back as Spencer snuggled in behind her but didn’t complain.
“I could fall asleep just like this,” he told her into her ear.
“Me too,” Darcie repeated, “but… the kids.”
“I know. The kids.”
They stayed awake holding each other as they began to talk about other things. Spencer told Darcie how Danielle at the back had asked him what he wanted to do with himself and it had got him thinking.
“You should do what makes you happy Spencer,” she told him and she meant it.
“That just made me happy,” he said with his chest rocking them both as he chuckled.
“We can’t just do that every day,” Darcie toyed back.
“I could if you’d let me.”
Laughing Darcie leant down to bite Spencer’s arm where he had it wrapped around her breasts. “Fuck Spencer. I’m barely going to be able to walk tomorrow. You fucked the shit out of me.”
Spencer again laughed. All the post-sex endorphins making him a little giddy and lightheaded.
“You loved it. You would have it any other way,” he told her.
Darcie smiling like the Cheshire cat as she admitted with a giggle, “I did.”
Rising up Spencer asked Darcie to have a shower with him so they could both get cleaned up. She stayed in bed as Spencer went to get some fresh towels for her. Darcie watched as Spencer walked out of the room. Biting her bottom lip as she took in his naked arse that she had taken ownership of.
In the shower, the two parents helped wash and bathe the other under the water of the wide rain head shower Spencer had installed. The heat and steam in the ensuite bathroom helping to sooth the aches they might be feeling. In the time before the school pick up, Spencer took Darcie for a walk around his property to further limber them back up. He kept them just to the area around the lake and the farmhouse and didn’t head off into the woods again.
Darcie liked the waterfowl that were swimming in Spencer’s lake. He told her of his idea to put up a barn in the same spot as the old one. Darcie suggested that he could put in a viewing platform over the water in front of his house. It would give him somewhere nice to sit out and have a coffee or glass of wine and watch the sunrise against the mountains in the distance. Spencer liked her idea and promised to look into it.
Getting close to the time they would have to part, Spencer asked Darcie when they would be able to see each other again.
“What do you know about bathroom tiles?” she asked him.
Not seeing the connection between the two he told her, “there’s a good wholesaler over in Cherryville that I used for the house. They have a nice selection.”
“How about we drive over together Thursday and you can show me what they’ve got. Help me pick out some for Kimberly’s bathroom.”
“So, you're going ahead with the reno?” he asked surprised.
What had started as just a cover story for the two of them being seen at the school together had started to sound like a good idea to Darcie. Speaking with the contractors that morning she had come around to the idea of freshening up her house. She even thought she might like to have the bathroom done in her and Tony’s room if she liked the work done in Kimberly’s.
Walking Darcie to her car he kissed her goodbye telling her he would see her at 3 pm to pick up Amy from school. When it took three goes for the old engine in Darcie’s car to turn over, Spencer joking suggested it might be better if they took his car to Cherryville on Thursday.
“It runs!” Darcie said pulling a finger sign at Spencer when her car finally roared into life.
He waited until she had driven off out of sight down his driveway before heading back inside the house. Spencer had just enough time to pull his messy sheets from the bed and start a load of washing before he too needed to go and pick Amy up. Grabbing his keys and wallet beside the front door, Spencer couldn’t help but laugh thinking about Darcie as the push-button start on his Mercedes came to life on the first go.
At the pickup line at Carter Junior High, Spencer leant against the side of his car as he waited for Amy to come out. Darcie was there a dozen cars over talking to one of the other moms. They both couldn’t help but smile when they looked at each other but refrained from walking over.
It was as he was distracted looking over at Darcie that he was ambushed by Britney, Tyler’s mom. Britney was one of those small-town people that never seem to leave the place of their birth. She had been the school prom queen back when and hadn’t really grown since then. She fell pregnant early and just sort of hung on at the school, the scenes of her greatest achievements in life. She was an asset to the school though. Helping out wherever she could. In the canteen or at sports meet. She was always available to chaperone field trips just as long as she was never allowed to drive.
“Spencer! Spencer!” Britney’s shrill voice breaking into his quiet reprieve from twenty yards away.
Spencer felt an involuntary shiver at the sound of her voice. She was forever trying to get him to help out in the school’s canteen.
“Britney,” Spencer called out back to her waving, hoping it would be enough to make her keep her voice now. A pack a day habit had left her with the lung capacity to keep it up though.
When she got to him, she broke straight into what she wanted to speak to him about. “Spencer the PTA is having a bake sale on Thursday to raise money for the girls’ softball team uniforms. I was thinking with Amy being on the team you might like to help out for a few hours.”
She had done her research this time. Spencer would rather just dip into his own pocket and buy the uniforms if it came to it.
“Shoot Britney. I’m actually all tied up on Thursday. I’d have been sure to help otherwise,” he said charmingly. Then thinking to play a little trick on Darcie. “You know Mrs Collins daughter Kimberly is on the team too, perhaps she could help out?” Darcie was likewise busy Thursday, with him, but it would be funny making her have to deal with Britney as well.
Amy made her way to Spencer’s car as Britney was heading to Darcie. He bent down to give his daughter a hug and a kiss on the cheek before they both piled into the car.
Amy sat in the passenger’s seat as they drove off. Spencer asking her, “what would you say with I got you a horse?”
“Oh my God dad! Are you for real?” Amy asked excitedly as they drove home discussing his plans to build a barn on the way. He was able to see Britney bailing up Darcie on the way past. The look she sent him making sure Spencer knew that she knew he’d sent her over to her.
