Chapter 3

What do you do?
Leap to your feet
You leap from the hammock toward the sound you know to surely be the mast breaking, and as you open the door to the storm that's taken the deck you are nearly blasted back by the ferocious wind and rain. Outside you can see your crew wrestling with rope, knot, and hook to get the ship under control as the mast of the ship stands in the center of the deck, cracked down the middle and aflame. You push yourself forward and slam shut the door behind you. You rush to the aid of your men, trying to put out the mast, but it never ceases to burn, the tied sail hanging above your head dropping hot sparks into the wind to rain down on your heads.
The ship is out of control. The waves you face are massive, as one comes careening over the side of the ship to put out the mast and throw half of the crew into the ocean. Oarsmen flee from their space down below, coughing and spitting up water as they spring from the hatch one after another like a geyser. Another wave comes right for you as you hold a rope taught in the effort to bind the mast and secure the ship.
It takes your ship within its break and scatters it like a toy boat made from sticks. You crash into the water. The last thing you see before blacking out is the storming night sky grow ever distant as you seem to descend forever into the depths of this foreign sea.
But do you survive?
