Chapter 83

Who is it?
Nothing's WRONG...
Titania closed the door tightly behind herself as she entered the apartment. She took in the scene, and smiled softly at Robin.
"That smells good, thanks Dad," She commented, before immediately breezing past the group at the table and ascending the stairs. No further words were spoken, but there was a heaviness to her steps that Robin was far too familiar with. Something had happened at school, and she wasn't going to talk about it.
Viola saw the tension growing on Robin's face at Titania's action. The tall brown haired girl hadn't even spared a glance at her, completely unlike her behavior the last time. No contemplation, no curiosity, nothing. Viola recalled her own teenage years, and those moment when she had tried to pretend that everything was fine when inside she'd been screaming. Those times when she couldn't tell anybody, because she had been sure nobody would understand, or if they had would have just made the problem worse.
"I'm sorry, one second," Robin apologetically shrugged before standing from the table. He ascended the stairs quickly, and tapped quietly on the door with the sign.
"What is it? I'm not hungry right now." Titania's voice from behind the door was quiet and precise.
"Did something happen at school today?" Robin asked directly. He wasn't going to beat around the bush on this one. If he didn't know what the problem was, he couldn't solve it.
Viola could hear the soft words from upstairs as the conversation seemed to continue. It was a well remembered script, and she hated having to see it from the other side. Miranda shrugged and rolled her eyes, before looking at her empty plate.
"Want any more?" Miranda asked, moving to the kitchen and dishing herself another of the rolled tortillas.
"Noooo..." Viola smiled, pushing the plate back with a fairly large portion of the dish still on her plate. This stuff was filling, and the temptation to eat more was there, but already she could see herself sweating out another jog to make up for this meal.
"Cool, more for me!" Miranda grinned, plopping herself down to eat again as Viola looked upstairs.
"She going to be okay?" Viola asked the young blonde woman, who shrugged in response.
"Can never tell with Titania. When we were in foster care... has Dad told you this story?" Miranda began. When Viola's eyes went wide with shock, Miranda quickly continued. "Oh this was a LONG time ago, when Dad was in the Army. "
Foster care... Viola cringed, as her thoughts ran over Robin. How had he lost them? What had he done? Miranda didn't seem ashamed to speak about it, so it couldn't have been... what had happened?
"I don't want to pry..." Viola began, noting that Robin seemed to now be talking inside of his other daughter's room.
"OK, so when we were really little, our moms were pretty shit," Miranda explained quietly. "My mom Dumped me on him when I was Two because she decided that she didn't want to be with a boring guy, and then my first stepmom decided she didn't want to be a mom two years after having Titania."
Viola was stunned by how matter of fact the young woman seemed to be about this. It wasn't a happy story, but it seemed like she had come to terms with it.
"So, things happened and Dad says that he was just as much at fault, but... I don't really know. All I know is that stepmom stopped coming to the foster care visits right after he left for the Army." Miranda shrugged, and Viola could tell that there was more to this story that Robin hadn't told his daughters. "And in Foster care they picked on her a lot. She was two when she got in there, and I had to take care of her a lot while we with the jerks."
Viola shuddered. She'd heard horror stories.
"Course, now I get to say I'm Rule Sixty Three'd John Connor," Miranda smirked, "I love Guns and Roses, know how to build my own computer, and don't trust anything my teachers tell me. Dad just won't let me learn how to do the stolen credit card thing."
"So does that make him Rule Sixty Three'd Sarah Connor?" Viola quipped. "Well, that explains the A-shirts."
"He does do the whole you're too important thing to both me and Titania," Miranda laughed. "I think he's kidding though. Wait, what was I talking about?" She took another bite of food as she thought. "Oh right, Foster care. Anyway the asshole Faustino and his kids were really mean to her, because she was always big for her age. It was like a big thing for them to pick on the big girl. So I ended up in a lot of fights. They never seemed to pay any attention to us until it was time to go to church, and then we needed to be on our best behavior. Just absolute hell, and I was never happier than when we got out of there."
"How old were you?" Viola asked quietly.
"I was six when we got out of there. Just had finished first Grade. Summer vacation we spent with the Army Daycare while dad Drilled. Then we went back to school." Miranda nodded, her smile brightening. "Dad's... well, he's not perfect, but he at least cares. He never searched our rooms like foster care did, or demanded that I show him what's in my bag before letting me leave the house. "
