James smiled with new questions in his head. He tugged Aurora back into the kitchen, sifting through the remains of his food to find things to have her try. In all he found yogurt, berries that needed thrown away, some leftover noodles from a Chinese place, and chocolate ice cream.
He put them all on the counter in front of her, and the first thing she grabbed were the berries. Half of a container vanished in a moment. He pushed the noodles forward, and she held them close to her face, tapping them with her tongue before pushing them back at him.
"Alright, so no noodles...let's try that again after I heat them up.", he said. He knew she couldn't tell what he was saying yet, but it kept him from feeling awkward. After a quick reheat, he slid them forward again. Again, after several taps with her tongue, she pushed them away. "Mmkay, no noodles...maybe you guys can't do grains."
Next was the yogurt. She looked extremely confused, and the first thing she did after flashing white several times was scoop a handful from the container. She kept her face down towards it, but glanced up at him. He grabbed a spoon and ate from the container to prove it was alright. After she tapped it with her tongue, flashing several more times while she did. She licked up a large glob. When she swallowed, she flashed a full white color and put the pile of yogurt onto the counter, licking her hands clean.
"Alright so not great but not a no. Got it. Good pick for if food gets low.", He smiled and put the containers away. She poked at the ice cream carton, pulling back quickly and eyeing it. When James turned back to face her she pointed, and let out a short trill that came with a slowly flickering blue color.
"Yes, that's okay.", he said while opening it. He took out a second spoon, handing it to her. She gripped it like a small stick and stared at him. "Ice cream.", he annunciated carefully while pointing at the contents. She stared inside the container.
"Iieechh...chheem."
"Close enough for now.", he said. He showed her a blue color, and demonstrated how to scoop some out. She tried her best to follow, mostly just stabbing at the frozen stuff. After several attempts it had softened up enough to let her spoon through. She tapped her tongue against the small clump a few times before handing it to James. She stuck her tongue out, showing that the place it had touched had turned white. Eventually the light purple color returned.
"Ooh. Okay, so too cold is no good...", he nodded. After finishing her spoon of ice cream he wandered around the kitchen, looking for anything else she might try.
