Chapter 15 by tailteller
Sally's answer?
"I...I'm not sure, James. What if someone's looking for her? We should find out who to tell.", she rubbed at her arm.
"Sally, something happened to her. I know it. Otherwise, why was she here in the first place? Why did she think I was a threat?", he countered, "I think she's afraid of humans right now. It's been two years, so why?"
Sally huffed and dropped her arm, "Shit...fine just...one week, okay? If we don't know what's going on after that...I don't know you have her here."
James pulled his sister into a hug. Holding her there for several moments. "Thank you. I promise, if something bad comes down I'll find a way to leave you out of it."
She returned the hug, but slapped the back of his head. "No, if something official happens you leave me out. If something bad happens you give me a call so I can help, you big dummy. Now...", she put on her best cheesy movie voice, "Take me to your cooffeeeee."
After a shared giggle, James gave the alien a blue screen and started walking. Sally began asking questions immediately.
"So what's her name?"
"I uh...can't pronounce it."
"What?"
"Their language, it's all these weird...noises."
Sally raised an eyebrow and teased, "Oooh, are they sexy noises?" Just afterwards, James dug an egg out from the fridge and handed it to the alien. She chattered a small reply, ending with a low trill. Sally blinked, stunned. "...Okay, not sexy noises...uhh...alright. We'll come back to that one. Can she speak any English?"
"Mmmno. So far she can almost say fork, and butcher my name."
"Hm. Okay well...I can try to work on that through the week...does she eat anything besides eggs?"
"Uhh...last night she assaulted the fridge until she found mold and she went nuts for that."
"Okay, gross, but okay. Maybe I can...work with that. Mushrooms?"
"I...hadn't thought of that. Fungus. Maybe. I'll pick some up on my way home tomorrow and we can find out."
Sally shook her head after a deep drink of coffee. "Let me get that. I'm gonna bring over some stuff to try and see if she'll eat it, and maybe see if she'll let me paint her nails."
"I...might hold off till she knows you can be trusted without me around. Just keep a blue screen handy, she calms down for the most part when she sees that."
"Okay. So what do we call her?"
James stared at the alien in thought. "... Nova?"
"As in Novaxan?", she squinted at him when he gave a nod. "Dude, no. How would you like it if she called you 'Hyoom'?"
"Alright...Glitter? Sparkles?"
"Nnnno that sounds like a bad stripper."
"Okay...any ideas?"
Sally tapped her fingers around her mug, sipping while staring at the alien woman. Eventually, white and yellow dots flickered around her head and Sally perked up. "Aurora!"
"...Like sleeping beauty?"
" No, not like sleeping beauty. As in the northern lights."
James perked up with her, and the alien woman flashed blue several times. He showed her a blue screen before pointing at her. "Aurora."
She flashed white, before pointing at herself and repeating the pattern and pitches of sounds she'd said that morning when James had introduced himself.
James pointed at each person in turn, waiting for her to attempt the name said to her before moving on. "James."
"Jshaymmmeszh.", She smiled when he showed her blue on his phone.
"Sally.", he pointed at his sister.
"Sh...awyee."
"Saaaally."
"Shaawyee."
Close enough. He had to search for a moment to find a flashing blue gif to show her when he pointed and repeated, "Aurora?"
She flashed white and blue back, trying to echo his sound. "Aww..owua?"
Sally put her coffee down and found a picture of the northern lights to show her. Pointing back and forth. "Aurora?"
James showed her the blinking blue again. She responded by shining blues and greens around her body with a smile. One that managed to look like a smile, rather than a toothless growl. "Awauwa!", came from her throat as a half trill.
"Okay, Aurora then.", James smiled. The next few hours were spent teaching her how to use her tongue to pronounce things. By the time Sally had to leave, they had managed to teach her how to pronounce d, l, n, and t. When Sally said goodbye, Aurora managed to pick up on hugging being a good thing.
How to spend the night?
