Something Unexpected

Brock's next words catch you completely off-guard. "Go, Aerodactyl!" he yells, throwing a poke ball down into the arena. The huge airborne pokemon bursts out of the ball and hovers just above the arena floor, letting out a loud roar that causes a few members of the crowd to let out audible gasps.

You had not been expecting this at all; you'd assumed Brock would just have used Onix since that's what he'd used against Blue. Aerodactyl was a previously-extinct pokemon that had only recently been brought back to life by scientists on Cinnabar Island, and you had no idea that the Pewter gym leader had one on his team, let alone on his lowest level team that he used for battling rookie trainers.

This presented a problem for you; Mankey had been your main strategy for dealing with the rock types in this gym, but Aerodactyl possessed a secondary flying type that would easily deal with a fighting type if given the chance.

You snap out of your shock and realise you need to get rid of this thing quickly. "Mankey, use Karate Chop!" you order, and the pig monkey charges towards Aerodactyl with all its speed.

Brock remains as calm as ever. "Aerodactyl, just as we practiced." The fossil pokemon soars out of reach of Mankey's attack with insane speed, then swoops back in to deliver a huge Wing Attack. The impact of the flying type's rocky wing colliding with Mankey sends him flying backwards, doing a couple of flips in the air before landing at your feet, knocked out.

Oh shit... You stare at your defeated fighting type before slowly withdrawing it to its poke ball, feeling despair wash over you, eroding your previous excitement of getting the win. I can't lose my first gym challenge... not when Blue won... but what the hell am I supposed to do against this thing?!
