Chapter 39 by simmaster

How does your planning go?

Quite smoothly.

You return to the camp and manage to convince the shaman to lend you some goblin workers to cut down the trees blocking the watchtower's view of the traps. You oversee their work as they chop away. Part of you wants to help, but you couldn't even if you tried since you don't meet the stat requirements for a hatchet.

That does remind you, you haven't tried to equip your dagger in a long time... You open your inventory to look for it.

Sacrificial Dagger
Damage: 15 (+5 Dark Magic)
Durability: 130/130

Nope. Your attempt to equip it is met with another denial. You don't meet the Strength requirement still. However, previously you also didn't meet the Agility requirement, so evidently you've gotten more agile... You just need a bit of muscle and you'll have some means of attacking.

A few times you have to warn a goblin who's about to get crushed under a falling tree, and they're also really slow to drag them off to the camp where you decide it's best to keep them. They're perfectly viable timber, after all. They could probably be useful for further construction at some point.

The goblins work all throughout the night, and when the sun rises, you inspect their work by climbing up the watchtower. It is admittedly easier to do so now that you don't have to worry about stepping on your robe, and you do also feel more agile. Looking around from your high position, you can see the stack of logs near the camp as well as the area surrounding every trap. From here you'll be able to see approaching heroes in time to play some pranks on them.

However, getting down from the tower and running over there before they've passed them would be impossible. You need some way to be down there and up here at once... or just a way of communicating with the watchman. Good thing you have a spell for that very purpose.

You climb back down, said watchman standing next to the ladder since there's not enough space up there for two people. "Looks good. There's just one more thing..."

The watchman crosses his arms. "And what's that, jester?"

"Trickster," you hiss. "I'm going to cast a spell on you. It's harmless, I can assure you. All it does is allow me to see through your eyes and hear through your ears, that sort of thing. That way, I can be just as aware of what's going on up there as you are, even though I'm down here."

He seems suspicious, but eventually nods. "Fine, let's try it."

You walk a little closer to the gate, knowing that this will put you in a trance so you want to be as close to the traps as possible before casting, and then you try Observer for the first time.

With a strange, warping sensation, suddenly you're looking at yourself. You look even sillier from this perspective... But you put that aside and instead pay attention to your new senses. Your body feels different, stronger and less flimsy. You can also feel your pointy ears, and a bit of a chill from the morning air against your only partially clothed body.

Yup. You're a goblin, alright. Or rather, perceiving the world through a goblin.

You have no control of your, or rather his body, and you watch as he climbs up the tower you just climbed down from and looks around the surrounding forest.

This is trippy. But it's serving it's purpose. You're down here, ready to spring into action, and yet you can see everything from up there. It's perfect. Now all you have to do is wait.

How long do you have to wait?
