Chapter 37 by simmaster
What test?
A duel against the shaman.
"If you're so powerful, surely you can defeat me in a duel," she says with a smirk.
Considering all your magic is about support, that's not at all a good way to test your abilities... Oh well, you can at least give it a try. You nod, agreeing to her challenge.
The other goblins clear out, walking to the edges of the camp to observe, and the shaman says "Begin!"
She waves her staff and sends a bolt of lightning at you, which you unfortunately fail to dodge. It stings hard, but you're still alive. You quickly cast Invisibility and circle around her. She fires a few more bolts in random directions in hopes of spotting you, yelling at you that you're a coward.
Let's think... You presumably need to get her health down, and you have no attack spells. You look through your arsenal...
Shadow Trick: Blinds target for 10 seconds.
Dark Influence (Passive): Monsters of level 16 or lower are more inclined to obey your orders due to your supernatural charisma.
Invisibility: Turn invisible for 10 seconds or until you take damage.
Spook: Inflicts fear on targets of level 16 and below for 15 seconds.
Minor Illusion: Creates an unmoving illusory object no larger than a 5-foot cube. It lasts for 30 seconds or until you cast this spell again.
Stiffen: Paralyzes target for 3 seconds.
Observer: Perceive through a willing target's senses, leaving your own body in a trance. You can end this effect at will.
Blinding her won't do much better than turning invisible, fear will only prevent her from fighting back for a while, illusions won't deal damage, and neither will paralyzing her... All of these will do nothing but delay her shooting you with that staff!
...Hold on. An idea is forming in your head.
As you fade back into view, you cast Stiffen. The shaman freezes up and falls over, and in the three seconds the spell is active, you rush over to her and try to tear the staff out of her grip. Unfortunately her paralyzed fingers are clutching it tightly. Even more so once the spell wears off and she tries to stand up while wrestling with you for control of the staff.
You let go of it with one hand and cast Spook. The shaman's eyes widen in sudden, irrational fear, and she tries to tear the staff out of your grip even harder as she wants to move as far away from you as fast as possible. Fortunately, soon the fear overpowers her and she just lets go of the staff, running away.
You wait for the spell to wear off and watch her turn back to face you, realizing she's lost her weapon. You smile underneath your cowl as you point it at her and fire a bolt of lightning. She hops out of the way, but falls to the ground in the process. You walk up to her and put a foot on her back, lowering the skull-end of the staff to her head.
"Surrender?" you ask.
"You cheated!" she spits at you. The goblins watching your battle boo at you.
You laugh. "That's what I'm all about. Won't it feel great to cheat the heroes? And imagine the tricks I'll be able to pull off with your help. A fine cooperation, hmm?"
"Ugh..." she mutters. "Fine. We'll give you a chance, jester."
"Trickster," you correct her, tapping her black, greying hair with the staff as a warning. Then you take your foot off her and let her stand up, returning her staff.
"So what 'tricks' did you have in mind?" she asks, still with an edge of venom in her voice.
Yes, what?
Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
