What happens when Buffy wakes up?

Buffy sees her mother

When Buffy opened her eyes, her mother was in the room, looking down at her with an expression in her eyes that seemed to be a mixture of concern and pity.

"Mom," she said. "Thank God you're here. There's been some kind of a horrible mistake. For some reason, the people here think I'm a mental patient."

Joyce Summers just sighed. "That's because you are a mental patient, Buffy. I had to commit you here for your own good."

"But that's impossible," said Buffy. "You of all people should know how sane I am."

"That's the problem," said Joyce. "I do know how sane you are. I remember all the fights, the tantrums, the throwing of stuff, the ripping off of your clothes in public -- I remember all that. Don't you see, Buffy? I did not want to have you committed but you gave me ****. You kept acting out and refusing to take your meds. And when you did take your meds, you always chose the blue pills over the red pills even though the doctor specifically warned you against doing that."

"Don't be silly, Mom," said Buffy. "I have never taken pills in my life. Okay, maybe a little Tylenol whenever I get an especially bad headache but apart from that..."

"And how often have you gotten these 'bad headaches', Buffy?" asked Joyce. "How many times during the past year? How many times during the past month? Heck, how many times did you have them just last week?"

"I - I - I don't remember," said Buffy.

"I thought so," said Joyce.

Then noticing the expression on Buffy's face, Joyce added, "Don't you see, Buffy? I have to do it this way or else you're never going to get better. Don't you think I want my oldest daughter to get better? Do you really think I want my eldest child to spend the rest of her life in a mental hospital?"

"Wait!" said Buffy. "You said 'oldest daughter'. That means Dawn must be here too. Let me talk to her instead. Maybe she can tell me what's going on."

"That's a nice idea, Buffy," said Joyce, "but unfortunately, I don't know anyone named Dawn. Your younger sister's name is Anne."
