Chapter 13 by porneia porneia

What do you do?

Chase after her.

You sit dumbstruck for but a second until your wits return. Jumping out of the boat you give chase and head out the emergency exit. Though you have clear sight for a good distance in all directions you don't see Selina, she has disappeared.

Security soon arrives to inquire what is going on. It takes a bit to explain everything, and you have to provide some identification, but eventually you're allowed free to go. As you head out of the park you turn on your phone. There are dozens of text and voice messages, mostly from Dr. Thompkins, your boss.

“What the . . . ?” You think as you see that Thompkins has been trying to figure out why you disappeared and stood up your date, Mary Novak. Giving a call to your boss you're shocked to find out she has never heard of a Selina Kyle or anyone matching her appearance. After reassuring Thompkins that you will call her back, you're able to get off the line and call Dr. Leslie Thompkins, the head of the Park Row clinic in Gotham, whom Selina claimed to know.

Leslie admits to being friends with Selina, but when you describe what has happen you hear Thompkins give a disapproving sigh. “Selina has had a very rough upbringing and runs with a tough crowd." She explains, "Deep down she has a heart of gold but she can make some very unwise choices.”

When pushed, Leslie will not divulge any more information. Understanding doctor-patient confidentiality, you don't press the issue. She does offer one piece of helpful advice. “Ignoring all the charm and playful banter, was there one thing Selina directly asked for?”

“She did ask to go see the display of early modern English jewelry at the Athenaeum." Your mind races trying to remember everything. "If I remember correctly, I think she literally said, 'I heard it's priceless' . . . Oh hell.” You uncharacteristically swear as you start to put everything together.

“I would make sure your museum is secure.” Leslie warns. You tell your friend that you have to go, but Dr. Thompkins insists on making two more points, “David, Selina can be very dangerous when cornered, be careful. But if you can, be kind, she doesn't understand how good of a person she really is.”

You wish you could ponder and analyze Leslie's advice, but you do not have the time. Thanking your friend you hangup and call the Athenaeum as you begin to run to your car. Getting a hold of Julie Dent, the museum's Director, you're relieved to hear there is currently nothing wrong at the Athenaeum, though her voice does seem a bit distant. Telling her you think there might be an attempted robbery you suggest the collection be put on lock-down and that you're on your way.

How are things at the Athenaeum?
