Chapter 7 by ThomasMoro ThomasMoro

Do things keep going so well?

Yes

As the day wore on, Peggy discovered that she liked planting seeds. It gave her great pleasure to get down on all-fours and dig holes and it got to a point that she absolutely hated it when they made her take a water break so that she could take a quick drink from a canteen or else make a quick dash to a nearby latrine. The latrine had no door either on the entrance or the stalls but that didn't bother Peggy because when you had to go, you had to go. And who cared if anyone looked at you when you went?

The people beyond the fence still stared at her but she shrugged it off. Let them look.

If nothing else, it made her feel like a movie star. Like Hedy Lamarr. Or Claudette Colbert. Or who was that lady in the Tarzan movie? Oh, yes. Maureen O'Sullivan. The only difference was they had to wear clothes. Peggy, on the other hand, was lucky.

By the time she took her second break for the day, Peggy noticed that her skin was turning red -- not just on her neck and shoulders but all over her body. It was as if Mother Nature and the sun were in a conspiracy to vanquish from her skin any sign that she had ever worn clothing.

This pleased her for some reason. No doubt in time her skin would turn brown all over and she would end up looking like one of the nut-brown shepherdesses back home in England. Or perhaps her skin would not turn nut-brown but instead become the color of cinnamon. Or coffee.

Coffee. Now there was a familiar word.

But why it sounded familiar, Peggy could not quite remember.

Did one of her ancestors work on a coffee farm? No, they couldn't have. After all, they didn't have coffee farms in England. Did they?

She couldn't remember. That part of her life seemed so long ago. It almost seemed like something she read in a book or saw in a movie. But then she really couldn't remember the last time she read a book or saw a movie. Could she?

She still remembered the names of certain movie stars but the last movie she saw... For some reason its name escaped her.

She shrugged her head and resolved not to think about it.

Living in the moment seemed like the better option.

Especially when some skinny brunette ran up to her on her third water break and tried to put something in her hand.

"What's this?" Peggy asked.

"It's a message. For my editor," said the brunette.

"Your editor?"

"Yes. I'm a reporter. I went undercover to uncover a big story and I think I found out what the big secret of this place is."

"Oh. That's nice. Where's your press pass?"

"They burned it. Along with my purse. And my clothes. And my notepad. Now take that message and deliver it to one of the people outside the fence. I'd do it myself but they're watching me. However, you're a new girl. So if you do it --"

"How can you tell I'm a new girl?"

"Your tan lines, of course. Despite your red skin, you still have some so you obviously just joined."

Peggy noticed the woman's own tan lines and realized that she was a new girl, too.

"Anyway, I have no time to talk about anything right now," said the brunette. "Just promise me you'll take the message and deliver it like I asked."

"What message?"

"The one in your hand. Just prom -- "

"There you are!" said a voice behind them.

Peggy turned to see a tall nude blonde and three naked redheads standing behind them. It was the blonde who had spoken and as Peggy watched, she kept speaking. "We've been looking for you."

"Looking for me?" asked Peggy.

"No," said the blonde, pointing to the brunette besides Peggy. "Her. The founder wants to speak with her."

"No, thanks," said the brunette. "I'm not interested."

The blonde smiled. "You don't understand. That was not a request."

With that, the brunette got up and ran, but she did not get far. The quarter of nude women were upon her before she got three feet and despite her best efforts, the brunette was dragged away.

The only thing the blonde said to Peggy was, "You better get back to work."

Which Peggy did after they left.

But first she threw away the message...

When they finally quit work for the day, Peggy noticed the brunette again sitting at the wooden bench that served as a communal dinner table. As she sat down beside her, she asked her how things had gone with the Founder.

"Oh, fine. He just wanted to welcome me to the family and make me comfortable."

"And that stuff you said before?"

"What stuff?"

"About being a reporter and stuff."

"Oh, that was just a fantasy of mine. I like to live out fantasies."

"You do?"

"Yes. Back in high school, I used to have all these dreams about being naked in public -- and now they're true."

"Then I guess you're happy here."

The brunette displayed the same beautific smile that Peggy and the redhead who had first greeted her had had earlier. "Oh, yes. I'm happy. I'm very happy. In fact, I wouldn't change a thing."

What happens later on that night?
