Mienna's changes

Coming back to your two children, you find Mienna kneeling down and encouraging Doffson to walk to her. He's hobbling his way across the grass in his bare feet. Though his steps are still sporadic, he seems sure-footed. He makes it to her without falling and she lifts him in the air, praising him for doing such a good job.

"Doffson! Mienna!" you call. They turn to look at you--and Mienna's eyes light up. She runs up to you, Doffson still in her arms, and nearly begins jumping up and down.

"Those are the clothes? Those are my clothes?"

"Calm down," you laugh. You hand her the larger set, the dress for a 'Youth,' and take Doffson out of her arms. You slide the dress for a 'Child' over his head, helping him push his arms into the sleeves.

Mienna easily beats him in getting dressed. She looks up at the two of you--and frowns. "You're not making Doffson wear a dress..." she suggests pointedly.

"Why not? I think he looks cute."

"But he's a boy!" Mienna objects.

You look at her quizzically. "So?"

She falters. "Well...Boys...Boys wear pants," she hazards.

"You were wearing pants, too, when you came to my house."

"That's different! Women can wear pants!"

"Then boys can wear dresses."

She opens and closes her mouth a few times. She couldn't find a way to refute your logic. She had to give up, realizing she was the one who had talked herself into that corner. "Fine. But if some guy mistakes him for your daughter, don't blame me!"

"I won't. Wouldn't that be funny, Doffson?" you ask him, snuggling him with your nose. He giggles along. "So, Mienna? How is it?"

"How is what?" she asks.

"Being a Human Youth."

"Oh! Well, I think I like it a lot more than being a child!"

"Wow! Those are a lot higher stats than just being a Child!" you exclaim.

"Not just that; for a level 1 anything this is a lot. I think it carried over all the stats from me being a child, even though my level reset."

"Oh. That's true, your magic is better than mine!"

Mienna just rolls her eyes as only a pre-teen girl can. "Mama, comparing anyone to your stats is pointless."

"Ah haha. I guess so. Then...What level do you need to become an adult?"

"Level 20. It will be harder; and I don't think we'll be able to find someone who will lay down and let me kill him again."

"Oh, I don't know. You and Doffson could always have another brother," you suggest, one hand running over your belly fondly.

"Mama!" Mienna objects.

"What?"

"I don't...like that idea," she grumbles through gritted teeth. She turns away, not willing to look you in the face.

"Mienna," you call, your voice filled with love for your daughter. You crouch down so you can meet her eye-to-eye. "Look."

She looks. She sees Doffson in your arms, reaching out both his small hands toward her. Tears begin to well up in her eyes. "See? Do you think it's a bad thing to have Doffson as your little brother?"

"No, I don't! But-!" she tries. She has to stop and wipe away a few tears. "I don't want Mama doing that with bad people! I don't want Mama getting hurt because of me!"

You can feel your heart melting inside you. You wrap an arm around Mienna and pull her close, making a family group hug. "I won't let bad people do it, then."

"But you let Doff-!"

"Doff isn't a bad person. He's a little prickly, yeah, but he kept his promise. Right?"

"... Fine."

"Then you want more brothers and sisters?"

"...I don't mind it."
