“Onix, use Rock Tomb!” Onix starts to shake, and soon five boulders materialize in the air. Honestly, you didn’t practice having Onix use this move much because it seemed like it couldn’t hit a moving target. But it’s the perfect way to crush this Venomoth without taking further poison damage. Just before the boulders fall, however, Janine flickers out of sight for a moment, only to come back into view right away. Just as the boulders hit the ground, Venomoth suddenly soars back into the sky, dodging the attack entirely. What? That’s impossible, it was nearly knocked out!

“Janine, what did you do!?” you accuse.

“Me? I didn’t do anything,” she replies, stashing an empty bottle in her gi. Damn it, she used a potion, didn’t she? That’s not fair, you can’t even enter the battlefield without getting crushed, poisoned, or blown away…

“Anyway, Venomoth, use Stun Spore!” Venomoth flies around Onix, taking advantage of the wind-down on Rock Tomb to get behind it. Fortunately, the rock snake recovers quickly and swats the opponent away with its tail, but not before a cloud of yellow spores is let loose. What Janine couldn’t see from her angle, however, is that the Stun Spore missed entirely. Hmm…

“Onix, use… O-Onix?” you yell, playing it up like Onix was actually paralyzed.

“Eheehee, it’s my win! Venomoth, use Psybea-”

“Rock Throw!” you order, cutting off Janine’s own command.

Venomoth stops moving and begins firing its Psybeam, only to get smacked with a large rock. Several more follow, all scoring direct hits against the stationary moth. It ends up on the ground once again, nearly defeated.

“How!? I thought I paralyzed it!” Janine cries.

“Nope, I lied! Onix, Rock Tomb again!” This time Janine doesn’t run interference, probably because she only had one potion. Instead, boulders plummet to the battlefield, entombing Venomoth and leaving it no chance to escape. Janine is **** to return her only pokemon to its pokeball, making you the winner!

The ninjas applaud, cheering on your victory over their master. “H-Hey!” Janine shouts, “Stop cheering for her! You didn’t cheer when I won last time, and I run this place! Betrayal!” As the cheers die down, Janine walks up to you, clearly disappointed. “Well, you won. This time. Here, I have to give you this.” She hands you the Soul Badge, an unmistakable shiny pink heart.

“Aww, for me? What a romantic gesture, I didn’t know you felt that way!”

“I-It’s purely platonic! Err, I mean, it’s just the badge, I didn’t pick it! Shut up!” she sputters. That’s cute. She’s kinda cute, when she isn’t rambling on and on about ninjas or her dad. “Anyway, in addition to the badge you also receive…” She reaches into her gi and pulls out a piece of paper. “…this application to the Ninja Academy! With the application fee already waived! In fact, all expenses are paid! Tuition, meal plan, everything!”

You stare at her blankly. “Really? That’s your ‘forfeit’ for losing? Not even a TM or anything?” If you look just a little bit closer, you’re sure you can see an angel and devil on either of Janine’s shoulders. And the angel was just chased away with a pitchfork.

“Nope, no TM here! It’s a free ride through ninja school, so please join my academy! Even if your skills in seduction need work, I’m sure we can turn you into a splendid kunoichi!”

Hearing the word “kunoichi” one more time makes something snap in your head. You hope it wasn’t your sanity. Whoops, it was definitely your sanity.

“Janine, you keep going on about my skills in this or that. But what about YOUR skills?” The poor girl visibly flinches at being called out. “You can keep your application. What I want is to see you demonstrate your own skills.” You receive more applause from the spectating ninjas. Sounds like this was a good choice.
