“Master Janine, on the subject of new students, we have many applications piling up. They look plenty qualified. Perhaps you should consider them, rather than harassing the challenger?”

“But they’re GUYS,” Janine whines. “Guy ninjas are lame. Kunoichi are awesome! And Emilia’s already a kunoichi. We just have to work on her sexual techniques and I know she can become my star pupil!”

You zone out as the obsessed Gym Leader goes back and forth with one of her advisers, only to have a somewhat random thought cross your mind. What’s Janine look like with her hair down? She probably looks cute. You carelessly disrupt the argument by walking right up to Janine and reaching for her hairband.

“Eeeeeeeeep!” she cries as she retreats behind a nearby ninja. Geez, you’d think you just summoned a giant venomous spider into the room or something.

“Don’t touch the hairband. It stays on. A spiky ponytail is an essential part of the kunoichi aesthetic!” she snaps.

“O-Okay. Chill out. I just thought you’d look cute, that’s all.”

“Kunoichi are cool, not cute!” she shouts.

Wow, that’s a pretty big deal to her, huh? “Okay, sorry, sorry. I didn’t think you were so touchy about your hair.”

“You’re the touchy one! Keep your hands to yourself!”

Geeeeeeez. Well, at least now you can get your battle started.

“Same rules as last time Emilia, 1v1. And since you probably haven’t cured your arachnophobia, go Venomoth!” The same purple moth pops out as last time, awaiting Janine’s orders.

“Onix, go!” This time you send out a more formidable opponent for the moth pokemon, your Onix reaching so tall it almost goes through the ceiling. Its size even gets some chatter out of the ninjas on the sidelines.

You already know that Venomoth has several status-causing spore attacks, so in a battle of attrition you’ll lose. With that in mind, you make the first strike.

“Onix, use Rock Throw!” Onix slams its tail into the ground, causing several chunks of rock to pop free from the floor and begin floating in the air. You hear a couple ninjas complaining about having to fix that later, but you ignore them entirely.

“Venomoth, dodge!” Most of the rocks go sailing past the moth, but the last one manages to snag its wing. If you can get it out of the air, it’ll be an easy win, but Janine counterattacks before you get a chance.

“Now Venomoth, Gust!”

The attack hits Onix directly, but it only causes your pokemon to slightly recoil. As expected, Onix is too strong to be moved much by an attack like that. Now’s your chance.

“Onix, Slam!” The rock snake whirls around with impressive speed, slicing its tail horizontally through the air at its opponent. Unfortunately, the powerful attack fails to connect. Crap, it still has too much mobility.

“Venomoth, use Poisonpowder!” Your pokemon is left open enough for Venomoth to close in and land one of its signature attacks, leaving Onix tinged purple. It’s not a problem though, you weren’t planning to drag the fight on anyway. And now that Venomoth is this close…

“Use Rock Throw!” It’s still able to dodge a few of the rocks, but Venomoth is grazed by one projectile, and another hits it directly. Alright! It’s barely in the air, and has a much harder time flying. One more hit should end-

“Venomoth, use Psybeam!” A multi-colored beam is fired from the moth’s antennae, surrounded by oscillating purple rings. Where’d this come from!? It’s a Poison-type, Bug-type pokemon that flies and uses Psychic attacks? That’s so unfair!

Onix winces away from the attack, its physical defenses unable to soften the blow. You’re worried for a second, but Onix remains standing. And Venomoth’s attack seems to have taken a lot out of it, leaving it open for a counterattack.

“Onix, Tackle now!” Fluttering close to the ground, Venomoth has no chance to dodge the direct hit from Onix. Yes! The extra movement by Onix seems like it spread the poison a little more, but it’s worth it. Venomoth is grounded and nearly out of the fight. You just need to crush this pesky moth with one final blow.
