"That's a magical device?" you ask.

"No. It's just been exposed to something with magic. It has no magical properties, but it can help pick up on the remnant signals of other magic. We also have satellites that have magical detection capabilities, but as you can imagine, it would require a massive amount of exposure to magic to be able to detect magic down on earth, and it wears off overtime, so we can't just keep sending satellites up in the sky. Anyway, I was using one of our satellites to track some anomalous magical activity in New York 2 months ago, until it suddenly disappeared. At the same time, magical activity was detected on this island before the residual magic on the satellite ran out. So, I've been doing research to see if there's a connection, and since getting here, trying to trace where the magic has been."
