A Valedictorian

Mandy walked into the room. What she found inside was a testament to order. One side of the room was empty, but the other was perfectly set up with sheets, decorations, and even a few stuffed animals placed with what could only be described as mathematical precision.

A blonde girl in a smart blouse and glasses turned from her desk and rose to greet her.

"Oh, you must be my new roommate! This is so exciting!" She said with smooth confidence. "My name is Jessica. It's so cool to meet you!"

"I'm Amanda, but I normally go by Mandy."

"Mandy, huh? Well it's nice to meet you, Mandy."

Mandy set her stuff down and Jessica offered to help her set it up. The two talked as she helped Mandy set up her things. Jessica came from the city and had come here on a full ride. She talked excitedly about all of the new and interesting things that would happen this year.

For her part, Mandy couldn't help feeling a bit intimidated. Jessica seemed smart, diligent, and accomplished. It almost made her feel small by comparison.
