Chapter 5

Which evolution do you choose?
Spore Hive
A flash of light fills your vision and a menu appears in your mind:
Spore Hive
Lvl: 5
HP: 22
Melee Attack: 0
Ranged Attack: 5 poison damage
Weakness: Fire
Special Abilities:
_Spore Body - your body exists as a _10-foot radius cloud of sentient, toxic spores, dealing 3 poison damage to creatures of your choice within the cloud. Additionally, you gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical weapons, and you may pass through spaces as small as 1-inch without squeezing. You gain a flying speed equal to your former walking speed.
Hypno Spores (passive) - living creatures that fail a Will save after inhaling your spores are charmed by you for 24 hours, or until you command them to perform an act of obvious self-harm.
You hop up and down in celebration, or you try to... The sensation of existing as a sentient cloud of vapors and pollen gives you a moment of pause. You never really had true eyes to begin with, but now you don't even have a head, let alone a face. Purple particles swirl and dance as you acclimate to your new body. Looking in different directions is almost instantaneous now, but you do still have some semblance of a field-of-vision. Turning about is more an act of will than physical exertion.
All around you the teeming mass of nigh identical redcap shroomkin hobble about aimlessly. The poor fools, you muse, reveling in your own triumphant ascension. Granted, you're no boss monster. Not yet. Your particulate perception lingers on the stone cliffside. A new patch and a new day, you think to yourself. Ambition fills your intangible form, and after one last glance around the dim, damp underground you once called home, you float off of the craggy, cave floor.
Perhaps your next evolution would allow for faster travel, but your ponderous, gaseous flight is a welcome change over your former, humiliating waddle. At least you could escape from any melee warrior types, but magic users would still be troublesome. After a long, tedious flight upward, you creep along the ceiling, dodging the dire bats that sleep in the nooks and crannies. No need for any unwanted attention just yet.
The tendrilous wisps of your violet spore cloud catches sight of a sliver of white amidst the dark recesses. At last! You can already taste the freedom of the surface world as you surge ahead, sifting through the crack with ease...
"AAAAAAGHHHH!" you psychically scream to no one but yourself. Oh, yeah... Fungi hate sunlight. In your hasty excitement, you forgot about your sunlight hypersensitivity. Your HP begins dropping like stalagtites in an earthquake, but you quickly zip back through the crevice and into the welcoming darkness.
You curse quietly, moping and floating down to a nearby cliff. This one has a rope bridge that extends across to what seems to be another sunny exit. What to do... the wide world awaits, but you're completely defenseless against the sun's constant attrition.
"I'll be only a minute! Don't leave without me!" you hear the squeak of a small voice ring throughout the cave's upper levels. Only 4 HP left... you can't really afford to die after only now evolving. You suspect that **** may reset you back to a paltry shroomkin, so you decide to float out and hide just beneath the rope bridge. No sooner than you settle in out of sight, you spot a portly, male gnome in purple robes approaching the bridge from the bright cave mouth. He has a stylish, green, handlebar mustache and carries an obscenely large backpack. All manner of vials and bottles jingle and rattle across the exterior of the pouch, some filled with glowing slime, others with crushed herbs. An alchemist!
A choice lies before you. Do you:
A) Attack the gnome and attempt to enthrall him with your Hypno Spores?
B) Try to hide somewhere in his backpack and ride along unnoticed?
C) Ignore the gnome and wait for sundown to properly assess the cave's surroundings?
D) ???
What do you decide to do?

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
