Chapter 43
by Yowza
So what now?
An apprenticeship.
"I won't deny that your magical potential impressed the entire faculty as soon as it was discovered." The headmaster stood in front of you, wand at the ready. The two of you have been engaged in private tutoring lessons every weekend ever since the incident with Harmony. "But do not let that get to your head, because untapped magical potential will remain exactly that: potential." With that said, he lunges forward with his wand like an expert fencer, his speed and flexibility betraying his age. Your own spray of cold water managing to meet the Headmaster's fireball in the middle of the dueling arena.
"Good defense, now press the offensive!" You step forward with your right foot, channeling magic through your leg and into the ground causing a giant pillar of rock to shoot up from the ground underneath the Headmaster. A less experienced duelist would have been instantly thrown off balance, but Frederick Hallgrave was a formidable opponent. Maintaining balance upon the tiny peak of the pillar, he wordlessly casts a lightweight charm that allows him to float down to the ground with lightness of a feather, while also slinging jinxes and hexes the entire time. Ducking and weaving between the Professors attacks, you return fire whenever possible while also closing the distance between the two of you. Finally, just before the Headmaster's foot touches the ground, you compress the air in front of you into a shimmering wall and push it towards the Headmaster. The wall was too big to be easily avoided, and Hallgrave's foot had not yet touched the ground. His wand flew through the air behind him as he stumbled backwards from the attack. You see your opportunity and transfigure your wand into a flaming sword, much like the one that Harmony used on you, and jump upwards with the intention of bring the sword into a downwards smash upon Hallgrave's head.
You look down in shock to see a shimmering blue staff sticking out of your abdomen. A spectral lance penetrating your stomach was more than enough to destroy your protective barrier and you drop to the floor in defeat. "Very well done, taking advantage of an opponent's recovery to knock them off balance is a very clever move. However, next time you're dueling make sure that you don't tunnel vision when moving in for the final kill." The Headmaster helps you up off the ground.
"That is enough for this weekend's detention, go hang out with your friends and I'll see you next week. "
"Professor? Why does it seem like everybody's favorite activity in the wizarding world seems to be dueling?"
"Well dueling is definitely the most flashy and prestigious of the wizarding sports, of course there is also Seeker Ball, which is an aerial sport where teams of players attempt to score a ball through three-"
"Thank you professor, that sounds absolutely awful."
Hallgrave's eyebrows raised in amusement. "Despite the convictions of some individuals, there is nothing wrong with being particularly good at only one activity."
As you leave the classroom to head to your own room you rub your sore stomach where the Headmaster's conjured weapon pierced you. Every weekend spent with Hallgrave was exhausting, whether it was an intense study session or more hand's on dueling practice. As you head back into your dorm tiredness threatens to make your legs buckle from under you. You flop down onto your bed and nearly fall asleep before being interrupted by a knock on your door.
