Chapter 34

Is she there when I get home?
Just a quiet house
Pulling into my parking spot the anticipation that I seemingly am making inroads with my wife’s sister had me not only distracted all practice, but had the coach more disgruntled than normal with my apparent apathy as he kept calling it. As I walk in the front door there is an ominous quiet and the excitement that Jamie was finally coming around just saps out of me.
With the absence of anyone else in the house I revert to my game day ritual and grab a fruit and vegetable lunch. Finishing quickly I turn to prep the pasta sauce ingredients I am going to eat on some spaghettini when I get up. With all that done I trudge my now tired ass up to the spare bedroom with the blackout curtains to lay down for a couple hours where I quickly drift off shortly after my head hits the pillow.
I am awoken abruptly by the downstairs fire alarm blaring which is quickly followed by the distinct scent of burning tomatoes. My thoughts instantly jump to the possibility of me turning on the stove before I went to bed so I fly out of bed and down to the kitchen before any fire gets out of hand.
As I blindly charge into the kitchen I only catch a last second glimpse a diminutive female form waving a towel at the fire alarm just inside the door frame before I bowl her over. With my size the collision is nothing for me and hardly slows me, however the woman thrown across the kitchen towards the still smoking stove. Seeing the catastrophe about to happen in slow motion I shift my continued momentum and quickly wrap my arms around the now flying woman who I am now able to clearly identify as Jamie.
Once I have her wrapped up in my arms I quickly turn our bodies so my shoulder takes the impact and she doesn’t impact the stove. With the twisting movement, the first thing that happens is I loose my own footing. The next thing it causes is our now combined weight to hammer the oven door rocking the entire stove violently. I look upwards just in time as the pot that was smoking tips off the stove and falls in slow motion towards us allowing just enough time to roll both of us out of the way.
“You okay Jamie, I didn’t know you were still here?”
Her response is?
