Chapter 20 by reaper13
How do the nobles react upon seeing your foxgirl?
They start gossiping like usual
As you walk into the throne room the herald announces your presence. He stomps his staff loudly on the ground, getting everyone’s attention and shouts, “Presenting Lord John the Amazing, most powerful sorcerer in the land, Count of Luminous and God’s Wrath!”
Everybody turns around to look at you, John the great and powerful. They had expected you to walk into court by yourself, like usual. But when they see Doe standing by your side they collectively gasp. Not just because of the fox ears she is showing, but also that you have finally found a woman you have deemed worthy to take with you to court. As you start walking along the red carpet which leads to the throne you head the other guests whisper. Rumors that you got married in secret are likely to be created this very moment.
Doe looks around herself in awe. In the past she could only ever spend a day in court in her dreams or fantasies. Now she is living that dream. She is amazed at the guests, the chandeliers, walking on a carpet instead of dirt or stones. The banners with the king’s family crest hang from the walls. Even servants wear expensive looking clothing and walk around with plates of food and drinks for the guests to partake in.
Your trained eyes of course search not for what the people are wearing, but who they are. As you walk towards the Prince you find some of the other greatest people in the kingdom are amongst the guests.
There is a person who is nicknamed ‘The Shadow Demon’. A sly woman able to disappear in a crowded room just as easily as an empty one. Rumor has it she can **** anyone anywhere at any time with anything. There’s even a rumor where she supposedly killed someone with nothing but a spoon and a slice of butter. You are so happy she is on your side.
Interestingly her belly is hinting at an early pregnancy. Who could have possibly tricked her into putting a bun in her oven. Could it be that girl standing close next to her. A redhead with twin pigtails. Hermaphrodites are on the rare side, but they are still plenty enough for it to be a possibility. Wherever she scrounged her up from, that redhead looks like just as out of place as Doe. You may want to inform yourself about her.
Another person who stands out is ‘The Demon General’. A woman whose strategic and tactical genius is unparalleled. A couple months ago, during the war, you were attached to her unit. When scouts reported two enemy armies, each triple the size of yours were coming to you, it was her decision for you to split up. She and her soldiers went to face the first army while you went to destroy the other. Any regular mage or general would have been unable to overcome those odds and be defeated. Both of you succeeded. You were exhausted and her troops had been diminished, but you each dealt a severe blow to the enemy.
You had heard from her that she was promised to someone and when the war ended she yearned to return to her fiancé. Now that you see her she’s got a small baby bump. Seems she finally tied the knot. But the person standing by her side is not the man you heard of, but a woman. You wonder what the deal is with that.
Then there is ‘The Demon Admiral’. Yeah, the king had a thing for giving his favorite agents fancy nicknames. He figured it would help spread fear into the hearts of the enemy soldiers. Anyways, this admiral is not the guy you want to face in the open skies. Or clouded skies. And definitely not in the middle of a storm. His airship, the Durandal, was simultaneously the kingdom’s flagship and his personal vessel which he used to great effect. Destroying enemy fleets, disrupting trade lines, pirating enemy freighters and even bombarding enemy cities from above. He is good in all of it.
Beside him stand four women, the lucky bastard. One of them you recognize as the enemy king’s daughter. So that’s where that teenage tomboy ended up. Close to her are two servant girls. Her handmaidens probably. Both of them unable to hide an early pregnancy. Probably the admiral who had his way with them. The last woman you recognize as his secretary/second in command, who is also pregnant. Clearly he has been planting lots of seeds. Good for him.
Then you see two of the three princesses. There is Cerralla, first princess of the realm and older sister to Darius, so technically first in line for the throne. But she is as of yet unmarried which leaves the royal bloodline in question. Hence why the law favors her brother, Darius, who is already married and so has more legitimacy over the throne than her. Yet she doesn’t show resentment over her brother being on the throne. Perhaps she doesn’t mind letting him have the kingdom.
Then there is Yandelle, second princess of the realm. She is younger than Darius by only 2 years and has a penchant for trade and economy. She is surrounded by both men and women, all of them merchants, and seems to love their attention. She has been seen being affectionate to both men and women so rumor is she is one of those hermaphrodites. But as far as you know it could easily be she’s simply affectionate to all who have a lot of money.
When you finally come to the end of the red carpet you stand face to face with the prince. A man already well into his twenties. He is sitting on his father’s throne, placed on a marble dais. On his head he wears his father’s crown and in his right hand he holds the ‘Globus Imperialis’. A magical artifact forged by an ancient wizard years before you were born. It is a solid golden orb adorned with gems arrayed in a geometric pattern. It is small enough to hold in one hand but too large to close your hand around it. It is easily the most sacred item of the royal regalia. Whomever holds it is assumed to hold authority over the kingdom. But the artifacts real power is that it can suppress magic wielders from generating mana, thus making them incapable of casting spells.
When you reach the end of the red carpet you and Doe stop. You smile at the prince and say “Prince Darius, it is great to see you again. Thank you for summoning me to your court today.”
Then you kneel. So does Doe when she sees you do it, just like you thought her.
“Thanks for coming, John. Your presence pleases me. As I have written in my letter to you, my father is ailing and it may fall on me to take over leading the country.”
“I fully understand, prince.” You reply while remaining kneeled. “And I pledge I will recognize you as the new king, should the unfortunate happen.”
Swearing your allegiance to Darius causes the prince to smile.
“Thank you, friend. Now, I am curious. You never once brought a guest to court before. Who is this lovely young lady you have graced us with today?”
You stand up and motion with your hands at Doe. She gracefully stands up but otherwise doesn’t quite know what to do.
“This is Doe, she is my latest test subject.” You introduce her.
Doe awkwardly smiles and waves at the prince.
The prince raises an eyebrow and asks, “Test subject?”
“I wished to find out if it was possible for me to combine the genetic structure of humans and animals.” You explain. “In her case, I used the essence of a fox. Evidently, I have succeeded. I now present to you the first fox girl in history.”
Doe politely makes a little bow and then twirls around so the prince can see all of her. Including her three tails.
The guests start whispering amongst each other again. So the rumor mill churns again. Let it. It is of no concern to you. You have proven once again your skill in magic is unmatched and people will continue to regard you as the greatest sorcerer that has ever lived. It’s fine.
But suddenly you are interrupted by …
