Ride along with Olivia and Margarita for their first day on the bus

You show up extra early the next day with Olivia and Margarita to be ready for a day with the mobile health outreach bus.
Nurse Practitioner Poppy Peaceflower Broadback is in charge, but she's fairly new to the outreach bus and she's happy to have you along. NP Broadback is a young-ish, curly-topped redhead, recently moved here from Boulder.

Today you have three stops. The morning stop is at a senior center -- vital signs, simple tests, health reminders. Early afternoon you're setting up in a church fellowship hall. Late afternoon you'll be in a grange hall, finishing up before a square dance gathering. You're expecting a mixed bag of check-ups, consultations, immunizations, advice -- particularly family planning -- and a few referrals for people who need more or different help.

You page through all the referral cards and brochures with Nurse Broadback. "I see there are a few new services," you say.

"A few," Poppy says. "The LGBTQ and sexual health referral services are new last year, Lydia told me."

"Things change," you say. "Not just the little country town we used to be. It's been a while since I was on the bus."

The day is familiar in a distant way. Your first job at the hospital was as an outreach nurse, in the creaky old converted school bus they had back then. The new bus is much nicer and a smoother ride, but the job seems much the same, albeit that the paperwork is mostly electronic these days.

Lunch is at a diner at a crossroads outside of town -- not Mary Forbes' diner, but the other direction down the highway. Olivia and Margarita hurry through their sandwiches and go off to the Ladies' Room together.

You and Poppy chat about your various experiences on the bus. Some things have changed, others seem the same. Just being a listening ear or a helping hand, or being encouraging about their problems really brightens some folks' day.

Poppy looks around and asks you, "Aren't they taking a long time?"

You look at your watch. "Yes, we should be going soon."
