A walk in the park

In some kind of an attempt to clear his head, Ryan headed into the park. He quickly saw that there were even more pregnant women there.

What had gone wrong with the world, he wondered. Had the whole plane been knocked up overnight? Or had it always been like this and he had been too wrapped up in himself to notice?

Ryan's gaze swung wildly each time a pregnant woman moved into view. He quickly realized that he was drawing attention to himself not least because most of the young women were accompanied by husbands.

"D'you think the young guy over there is checking you out?" Ryan heard one of the husbands ask his pretty red-haired wife.

"In this state?" the woman replied, holding her distended belly. "He's more likely to be checking you out dear."

Ryan fled.

After that, Ryan was a little more circumspect about where he let his gaze fall. He realized there was little point in going after a woman who was out walking with her husband or boyfriend. He needed to find the ones who were on their own on this Saturday morning; whose men had decided that big bellies and lactating titties were not a turn-on and had abandoned them.

Then he saw her, sitting on her own; a young black woman in the early stages of pregnancy, sitting on a park bench, reading a book. Ryan noticed that she squirmed on the bench now and then as if trying to satisfy a particularly troublesome itch. Ryan sat down at the other end of the bench.

"Hi," he said nervously.

"What are you reading?" asked Ryan, desperately trying to make conversation. She flashed him the front cover of the book and somewhat bemused, made another attempt to commence reading it.
