"Linda, I want this, gods know I do, but not like this: not like animals in rut. I want a relationship, not something that is nothing more than appetite. Please understand..." I said, but Linda looked wounded and hurt.

"So I'm ugly, is that It?" She demanded on the verge of tears.

"What? No! That's not what I'm trying to say at all!" I blurted, surprised.

"Then what ARE you saying Ensign?" Linda said, retreating a few feet, as though physical distance would bring her emotional distance as well.

"I'm saying I want to be more to you than just a sex toy: I want to be your lover!" I exclaimed, but it was instantly apparent I had blundered again.

Linda's face contorted in rage but she displayed a surprising amount of control. "That's what you think of me?!? That I see you as a sex toy?!? That I'm an 'animal in rut'?!? You Vulcans are all the same! You think humans are just beasts because we can't live for hundreds of years and still have to eat meat! Well you can take your Vulcan cynicism and bury it beside your repressed emotions! You and your hand have fun tonight Ensign Davis, and every night hereafter!" Linda screamed at me and bolted for the door, shouting, "Computer: Escape!"

I heard her sobbing as she ran into the hall, and Abby and T'Vanu looked at me like the most blithering idiot in all of space then ran after her, leaving me alone with my mistakes and emotional pain...
