Chapter 9
by Cliffe
Does he actually work on it though?
He tries to.
Despite his many attempts though, John didn't get many chances to use Fighter's Eyes between the time he spent on the sports fields and the time it took him to get all the way back to Mr. Stone's Biology class. The chances he did get were more limited by the sheer amount of mana that the ability cost to use. In the end, he was left with nothing left in the chamber by the time he got back to Mr. Stone's classroom, and, rather than focus on meditating like he had in Mrs. Flung's classroom, John was left under the watchful gaze of an over-attentive biology teacher. Still, he was barely paying attention by the time that Mr. Stone passed out the biology books and gave a short explanation for what the class would be doing.
Almost blankly, John lifted the book and stared at it, his brow furrowing as he used the last mana point his regen had recovered to use Observe on the thick hardcover book. His eyes nearly bulged out of his head as a whole new kind of pop-up appeared in front of him.
Learn BIOLOGY 101?
YES / NO
John stared at the pale blue screen hovering in front of him for what felt like a minute, his body frozen in place until Mr. Stone actually began to snap at him for not opening his book. John quickly pressed YES and he felt his head suddenly swoon in place, as if it were threatening to collapse on him from the abrupt transformation swirling throughout his mind. This feeling was accompanied by the sudden rush of knowledge, a stream of information that detailed not only the stuff written in the book, but also went on to connect the dots for him on some of his other magical abilities.

And when he finally finished reading and closing the pop-ups, and opened the Biology book, John found the pages blank and empty.
"Uhh... Mr. Stone, this book is blank..." John coughed aloud, clearing his throat of the sudden surprise from reading all of that.
"What?" the teacher asked and walked around the nearby desks to look for himself. Once he got close enough, he stopped and tilted his head to the side as he stared at it. "That's weird..." he grunted under his breath, and went to retrieve another book for John. "Here...A printing problem?" John heard him mumble as he took the second book. Part of him was tempted to try and learn this one too, just in case it gave him levels in those exact same abilities or let him learn some other new skill, but even if it gave him the option to use it again, he doubted anyone would actually believe that he had gotten two books like that in a row.
John didn't spend much more time paying attention to the rest of his classes after that. Mostly, he used the last two hours spamming Fighter's Eyes and Observe. Most of the uses on Observe went to the new Biomancy passive and trying to discover what it was that those damn question marks under it meant. This eventually lead him down a new path of thinking that he couldn't break from until school went out for the day.
As a gamer himself, there was a large part of him that wanted to explore and go down every path possible. It nagged at him to get every spell, every ability, every buff he could... but he knew from experience that that wasn't an ideal choice.
No... If he wanted to get anywhere, to do anything, John had to pick a class. He had to make a choice and begin working on one trait in particular. If things were different, if he had ended up with a gaming life where he was dealing with monsters in his day to day life then spreading his stats across all fields would end up with little to no strength on his part after only a couple of levels and he could very well end up stuck.
The problem was if he wanted power then... which class should he pick? What ever it was...it had to be something good. Something powerful, but subtle. Something he could get away with by giving out simple explanations if he had to. That crossed out pretty much every magic using class he could think of. More than that, he needed something that would give him those simple explanations.
Something that would help him hide from everyone that he had gotten these new abilities.
He got so engrossed in these thoughts, that by the time John noticed it, the bus had already left without him and he was left to walk home. John groaned at the thought, his feet carrying him quickly away from the main building of the Ashcroft Academy as he started walking. Thankfully, it didn't take long for John to put some good distance between him and the school. The walk, tiresome and annoying as it was, was still somewhat of an easy one.
"I don't want to leave out magic..." John admitted to himself with a frown. After all, a person doesn't just get magical superpowers and then just not use them! He had to use them! He just had to figure out how...
"Excuse me," a womanly voice said suddenly, approaching John from the side with a steady jog. John froze upon hearing her voice. She didn't hear him, right? As cautiously as he could manage, struggling to maintain a straight face as he moved, John turned his head just enough to look at the short, Indian woman that crossed a nearby street and walked straight up to him. After a couple moments, a look of confusion passed over her olive tanned features, and she cocked her head to the side as she stopped right next to him, her long, braided black hair swung from side to side behind her. Even in his moment of sheer panic, John couldn't pass up the opportunity to check her out, especially with what she was wearing.
John's eyes fell to her large heaving chest as the two of them awkwardly stood there. The great valley her cleavage made glistened slightly with a fresh sheen of sweat, a whole expanse of soft seduction trapped within a dipping sports bra. Below that, her glistening stomach stood completely bare and looked surprisingly smooth, like the muscles in her abdomen had forged a flat, solid wall from all the workouts she had clearly been putting herself through. His eyes dipped one more time as she cocked her womanly hips to the side as the two of them stood there, and he stared for a moment at the skin-tight, ass hugging pair of spandex pants she had on.
"Please." She practically glared at John after a moment, and upon seeing the confused look that he gave her, she gestured past John to a door on the other side of him. The door that he had been blocking by standing in front of it.
"Oh, sorry..." John mumbled shyly, stepping back and opening the door for her as he did. She grumbled something when she walked past, but John was unable to hear what it was that she said, not that he needed to know based on the overall tone that she muttered with. Instead, he went ahead and used Observe.
Grace Patel
Level 13, Trainer
<Miss Mysterious>
345/346hp
Relationship: -40
Really? -40?! She had just met John and already didn't like him! Despite how he felt about the lack of fairness from so quick a judgement on her part, it was still hard to not keep checking her out when she walked past, her bubble butt bouncing behind her with each step. John's eyes moved as Grace went, struggling to watch her until the very moment when he had to let the door close. His eyes, no longer distracted by the perky rear of a beautiful woman, fell to one of the many signs emboldening the glassy front entrance. Almost unconsciously by this point, John used Observe when he looked over them, especially for the ones that were almost illegible from all the design that had been put on them. It had already become very useful in the short time that he had had the ability.

John stopped, his eyes glued to one of the signs sitting there on the door.
Perhaps, that was just what he was looking for.
