Chapter 10 by crunchyspag crunchyspag

"What choices does a man like me have here to establish himself?"

"There are several"

The governor leans back, hands pressed together thoughtfully. "A common path is to take up an encomienda, a farm worked by the Indians. You would be responsible for their care and education in Christianity, in return for a percentage of their production." The governor reaches into his desk and pulls out a book. "These are the Laws of Burgos. You can read them at your leisure if you are interested in becoming an encomendero. They establish the rules and regulations for the management of such an estate." You flip through the book. "Interesting. And what else?"

"Second, we are always looking to have more capable men in the garrison. Pirates are a frequent menace, and we cannot count ourselves safe from mother Spain's rivals either. As a noble, I would be happy to offer you an officer's position, with opportunity for quick advancement. It is unlikely to be as profitable, at least in the short-term, but I'm sure it would be an excellent use of your skills, and a boon for the colony." Quite a flatterer. "Yes, my father did make sure I was skilled at arms. It is a good option, but I would like to know of any other choices."

The governor rolls his eyes. "Well, a final choice you may wish to try is, ugh, prospecting. Some gold was found here in the early days of the colony, but what there was is mostly gone. Some still cling to the hope of finding one last gold vein, but if you ask me it's a waste of time. Frankly, you would have more luck ranching pigs or cows than panning for gold, I would imagine. But you are a free man, and may waste your time if you so choose."

It's a lot to think about. "Thank you governor, I would never have been able to settle into a way of life here quickly if not for your help and advice. The things you have told me are weighty indeed, and if it would not bother you, I will need time to think on them" you say, rising from your seat. The governor gets up too. "Of course, my friend, I am happy to help. When you have made a decision, come back and I will help you get started. Our colony needs fine people like yourself" he says with a polished grin. You exchange goodbyes and Sancho takes you to a nearby inn to spend the night, on the governor's tab of course.

It's a big decision to make. Which sounds best?
