Chapter 9
by Duskford
What's his announcement?
Roghan and Cecilie's engagement
There wasn't a single eye in the room that wasn't fixed on King Albran Lionwell as he made a pause that increased the suspense and made almost everyone curious about his speech, with the obvious exception being the ones who already knew what he was going to announce.
"Thanks to the benevolence and guidance of our glorious Lord of above, Alxer, we are living in times of peace. The war has ended years ago, an horrible and sad conflict in which Kinwald fought alongside our dear friends, Sandhaun, Arcans and Falbrein, against our common enemy, Duskath. While our friends of Anglurea had their just reasons for not aiding us, I am sure they despised the godless nation as much as we did and still do," he said and then made another pause. Riekan quickly glanced at the ambassador of Anglurea, and surely enough, the elf remained as stoic as when she was speaking to the King, giving only a quick, curt nod at his father's calculated jab. "That war allowed us to guarantee our present, but now, my friends, now we must look towards the future. I invited you here today to share our joy in announcing the engagement of my son, Prince Roghan Lionwell, to the daughter of one of the oldest and most prominent families of Kinwald, Cecilie Volness!"
A round of cheers broke out in the ballroom as Roghan embraced Cecilie and kissed her on the forehead. Riekan raised a surprised eyebrow at this. By having Roghan marry before Reywan, their father was all but saying out loud that he considered Roghan to be the future king once he passes away. He then turned towards the frail-looking Reywan, his oldest brother was smiling at Roghan. Did he know about this beforehand?
Despite his health, Reywan was a very kind man, never blaming anyone or Alxer for his bad fortune. Before his condition worsened a few months ago, he made an effort to take weekly walks around the streets of Kinend to talk and interact with the common people and know about their needs and demands. Everyone loved him, but at the same time, almost no one wanted to see a weak king governing the kingdom, so there always had been whispers and silent pleads asking for Roghan to take the throne instead of him.
Riekan then shifted his gaze to Roghan. Even with their differences, he loved his brother, but he also knew how military-oriented his mind could be, especially after he ascended to second in command on the Crimson Lions. The green-eyed young prince began to wonder.
What kind of Kinwald we will have under Roghan's rule?
Does anything else happens during the ball?
