Chapter 3
What is the gender of the grandchild?
Granddaughter
Bright sunny day with the birds and the bees busy with their lives. Swirling with a light breeze showing a hypnotic movement across the grass fields little wild animals play in peace. The village wide awake and busy as it always has down below. Faervel walks up a dirt road in the same clothing as yesterday.
She sees a log fence with two layers and a small little yellow wooden gate between it. Within lies a garden of herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers galore all over the yard with no space left untouched. A tiny house with re-purposed and natural material blend the exterior. She opens the gate to enter the property to see her old friend Robert this morning.
Knocking on the vintage wood door with ornamental details carved on it. She waits for him to open the door ready for the adventure they had only discussed last night. Once the deal was made the only words she spoke after would be what they would speak of today, so as not to place too much fear on her old friend. The adventure itself wasn’t something she had hoped would come to be, but the prophets of her people had predicted it and so it must be.
Footsteps are heard from behind the door before a faint yell that the door was open from her friend confirmed his invitation. She opened the door to see him on the other side of the house in the kitchen cutting up some fresh vegetables. House interior walls were either cob based or had some wood within the walls to hold objects he saw fit. The area she walked into was the living room with a couple chairs and a fireplace toward her left, and to her right was an open study area with maps and papers stacked to the ceiling. A desk full of papers as well showed his travels of the past and small knick knacks of his friends and family.
In front of her was the kitchen a small room where Robert was busy cleaning vegetables had a small table for two along with a cob oven, a rock basin for cleaning, a cob counter with wooden cabinets below and full crates on the walls. It was full of your usual kitchen material. Walking into the kitchen she saw the odd house past Robert out in the back. Small sleeping area to the side of the kitchen connecting it with the study area. Fairly open plan home that seemed simple and fitting for a man that had been to the outside world this was paradise.
“So tell me friend about your marriage life” Robert asks turning around with a weaved basket of multi-colored vegetables.
Faervel grabbed a purple carrot eating the green leaves of it first before responding to Roberts statement that didn’t surprise her that he had remembered the day. “Ronin as you know was my father the lord of Heather’s Falls who wanted me to marry Maerel the best solider of all elves. He would had killed thousand lycans while his fallen comrades had perished in the last great war of these lands.”
“Yes that Maerel who you seemed hesitant of back in the day” Robert goes on setting the vegetables down on the table and sitting down to listen to more of Faervel’s story.
Faervel also sat down besides him “The marriage as you know was set for three months after you had left. The week before Maerel and his companions were settling a dispute near the barren caves of the lost spirits. One of his companions came back with grave news.” She saw Robert leaning forward with shock and horror of what she was about to speak of. “He spoke of a creature of a different dimension far worse then any we have ever seen had taken all of them but him. He was the witness of the worse day for my father. I on the other hand felt a great burden lifted from my shoulders and great sorrow for all the elves that sacrificed their lives for us.” Showing tears as she tells this story “I urged my father to bring you back, but he had refused to have his daughter marry a human. I did the next best option I decided to go full meditative for years I remained in that state.”
“Why!? How!?” Robert shaken and confused by the story his friend was telling him. He sat back in his chair flabbergasted that her life had been this way for so long.
“Recently the region that stole Maerel from us has reignited. I escaped my fathers watchful eyes and escaped. I warned several allies to prepare for the upcoming battle that is upon us. You are the last one I am talking to before heading out for the meeting with Rose and Patrick and their respective clans.”
“What of the other human lands?” He asks her knowing they had once come to aid the alliance during the last great war.
“I’m afraid your are best hope to convincing them to join once more. They are far too busy with their mechanical devices. They believe they are superior to all, however are blind to the lands.”
The back door opens with a young child opening the door. Breaking the tense moment between the two old friends “Grandfather Doe, you called for me. I am ready for our hiking trip!” The child Faervel noticed is the same child as the one yesterday in the marketplace. With the curly brown hair, freckles, and thin frame to match.
“Jane I would like you to meet an old friend of my an elf named Faervel” Robert introduces his granddaughter who comes hugging him with happiness of any child of any race would contain. More bravery and courage then any adult would dare to contain.
Faervel bows her head gracefully to greet the child “Pleasure to meet you once more Jane.”
“You have met before?” Robert bemused by the statement.
“Of course she paid for the fish we had last night grandfather” Jane replies with Robert and Faervel both laughing at the moment that is in front of them.
Robert places Jane on his thigh and looks her in the eyes to ask her “Jane how do you feel about going on a long trip with the two of us to will take us to great lands?”
“I will follow you anywhere grandfather, you know that!” Jane courageously states “I will do me best to protect us.”
Robert turns to Faervel to relieve any hesitations “She may be only eighteen, but she is far older in wisdom then she appears.” Faervel bows before getting up. Robert also stands. The adventure is set for the three of them to head to the meeting place at Aric’s Run.
