The mobile outreach bus

The mobile outreach bus has a different rhythm than working on the wards. It's a longer day, but broken up by travel and paperwork. Setting up in a church fellowship hall, grange hall, or just parking the bus somewhere. Doing pulse, blood pressure, height, weight, glucose and iron tests. Flu shots, childhood immunizations. Consultations. How to make the healthiest choices for your food aid. How to use birth control. Referrals. Resources. Making appointments for follow-up.

It's all familiar, in a distant way. Your first job at the hospital was as an outreach nurse, in the creaky old converted school bus they had back then. The new bus is much nicer and a smoother ride, but the job seems much the same, albeit that the paperwork is mostly electronic these days. And maybe people seem a little more discouraged, but they perk up when you smile at them and help the get what they need.

Halfway through the first week, Julie comes up to you grinning at lunch break.

"What's got you all happy?" you ask.

"Young lady heading off for her first tour in the army," she says. "Sexual health consult."
