Chapter 46 by fredmarley139

Do you go explore the cave?

Let's go on an adventure

You turn back, and head towards the cave. As you get closer, the dark opening looms over you. Without hesitating, you plunge inside, only to immediately pause. It's black, pitch black. Oops. You knew it would be darker in the cave, you just hadn't realize it would be this dark. To be fair, you've never been in a cave, or any other place where the sun is blocked. In fact, you've spent the entirety of your existence under the open sky. The only time you've ever been in the dark is during the night, though in retrospect that should have given you some indication of what it would be like when the sun is blocked. You probably should have brought a torch or something. Obviously, you haven't quite thought this adventure through. Fortunately though, the longer you stand in the cave, the easier it is to see. It almost as though the cave is getting brighter. You look around for a light source. Then you make a realization: Duh! Your eyes glow. You are your own source of light. Well, that makes this a lot easier.

You begin to explore the cave, although with perhaps, slightly more caution than before. You look around you. You stand in a fairly large cave. The entrance behind you is narrow, which is why it is so dark, however the cave quickly widens to form a clear, open space surrounded by light, grey stone. The cave floor is slight sandy with a few stone outcroppings and loose stones lying here and there. The roof arches over you, a few feet above your head, with a couple of stalactites hanging down. At the back of the cave is a tunnel leading further in; you follow it in deeper. After the entrance chamber, there are number of other chambers of similar size and appearance to the first, connected by tunnels. A few of the chambers have side rooms and you take your time to thoroughly explore them. As you proceed, you're increasingly surprised that there are no monsters here. The cave system has plenty of space, with numerous defensible position. It's almost as if it was designed to be infested with monsters, which, now that you think about it, it probably was.

Eventually, you come to be what must be the main cavern. It's similar to the others, but the roof is at least twice your height and the space is significantly larger. As you continue to look around, you here a deep, throbbing growl from further back in the cave. Hurriedly, you search for the source. You find it. Hidden in one of the alcoves towards the rear of the cavern is a dark figure. It moves closer and you get a good look at it. You kinda wish you hadn't. You're not sure what this thing is, but it ain't that good looking. Standing a full head higher than you, it resembles an ape, with big shoulders, long arms, a hunched body and bowed legs. It's covered in leathery, grey skin, and lots of thick, bulging muscles. The hands at the end of each arm are huge, each finger tipped with a large, blunt talon. There's also a large potbelly hanging over a ragged, filthy loincloth, for which you are supremely thankful. The belly doesn't do much to reassure you though: that just means it eats well. You can't really make out any facial features in the gloom, though you're not really sure you want to. It does seem to have far too many teeth. It can't possibly need all those things. They'd just get in the way while chewing. And, surely, they didn't have to be so big either. They barely fit in its mouth.

Now you realize why you didn't find any other monsters in the caves: this guy. The thing stomps a foot and gives a challenging bellow, displaying its yellow, jagged teeth in the process. Obviously, it's not happy that you're here.

What's it going to be: fight or flight?
