Chapter 41 by simmaster
Now what? Wait for her to turn human, or travel without a map?
Wait.
You'd rather not travel without a map. You might accidentally wander into a high-level area and run into heroes way out of your league. As such, you sigh and tell your pack member: "Very well, let's wait until dawn. But we shouldn't stay here. The party might come back, and I don't trust my luck enough to desire a second encounter with them."
You lead Ilimia out of the camp, walking until it's out of sight and then some, just to be sure the party will have the slimmest chance possible finding you before dawn. You sit down on the field, a little uncomfortable with how visible you are in this flat terrain, but still fairly confident in your ability to outrun potential threats. Ilimia joins you, sitting down facing you. She still looks uncomfortable with her situation.
"You have been silent for some time now," you point out. "That... attitude you had earlier appears to be missing."
"Well, this isn't exactly what I was expecting when I became an adventurer!" Ilimia snaps at you.
You smile. "Oh, I think I get it. You're one of those girls who put on a strong, foul-mouthed attitude but it's really a façade to hide the nervous and fragile little bunny underneath."
Ilimia glares at you, but doesn't answer.
"So... What were you expecting when you became an adventurer?" you ask after some time of silence.
Ilimia stays quiet for a while before answering. "You know... Hero stuff. Helping people and... stuff."
"Is that so?" you ask with a grin. "Are you sure you're not altering the truth because you're talking to a monster?"
"Okay fine, so I wanted to be kicking monster ass and raid dungeons and become a badass warrior. Happy?"
"I can never be happy with someone with such ambitions. It's people like you who torment my people and make me fear for my life and the lives of my loved ones. Loved ones I no longer have because of your type."
Ilimia glares at you again. "Well, excuse me! That's kind of how this game works! Heroes kill monsters, monsters kill heroes! How was I supposed to know that not all monsters were okay with that deal?"
"Did you ever ask?"
More silence fills the air.
"How do you feel about your situation as a monster?" Ilimia asks eventually.
You can't help but smile. "Not a fan. For a long time I was a little child, but that didn't stop heroes from trying to kill me. Me and everyone I knew. I managed to outlive them, and one day I found myself with no friends or family left."
"So... Monsters don't respawn?"
"Most do, as far as I know. The werewolves of Torgniam don't. And I happen to be from there. As such, if I die I'm dead for good. An NPC will be randomly generated to take my place, but I myself will cease to be. And that's a pretty terrifying thought. That thought, combined with heroes' utter disregard for monster life, is what drives me to do the things I do now. The fear of ****, and the mourning of those I know who are already dead."
"And what exactly ARE you doing now?"
"Didn't I explain that back in the village? I'm looking to become stronger. And considering my situation only a few days ago, I'd say I've made considerable progress."
"And what are you gonna do with that strength?"
"What the heroes have been doing to monsters all this time. What they've been doing to my village, and trying to do with me. I'm going to hunt them. I'm going to bypass them in the food chain and make them my prey. And take ****."
"Sooo your solution to heroes killing your kind is to kill them back? Do you see how that's kind of... hypocritical?"
"I'm not looking to change the world. I'm looking for vengeance. I don't dream of a world where heroes and monsters live in harmony. I dream of a world where everyone who wronged me and my kind are dead or enslaved. If that makes me no better than them, so be it. In the end of the day, I'm just a werewolf who strayed away from home looking for ****."
"And I'm **** to be on your side..." Ilimia muttered.
"Hey, it can't be so bad. You still get what you want, basically. You just get to kill heroes instead of monsters. Which give a lot more XP. And don't forget all those levels I gave you, even though it was an accident. Overall, I think you're pretty well off."
"I still don't like it..."
You nod slightly. Of course you couldn't expect her to accept her role as your subordinate immediately, but you have a feeling your talk has made her somewhat less against the idea.
She lays down, presumably to go to sleep, and you stay up. Since you are expected to both be awake during the day as a human and during the night as a werewolf, you don't need to sleep. It would be quite a design flaw if you did.
Does anything happen during the night?

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
