Chapter 8

What do you do next?
Loot the body
It's obvious that the skill choice is not urgent, so you leave it for later and turn your attention to the dead guy. Immediately you notice the sign "Hardcore Mode" flashing above him. Well, that's a nice surprise! The equipment of most players is locked to their body to make sure they don't lose their best gear if they get killed. But some "heroes" activate Hardcore Mode, making it possible to lose all of their gear in exchange for a bonus to all gold and experience they earn. Usually it is high-level players that use this option, as they are the ones who need a ton of experience to advance, but occasionally some overconfident low-level players also activate Hardcore Mode. Seems like this guy belonged to the latter group, lucky for you.
The first thing you notice is the black ring he is wearing on one finger. You take a closer look:
Cursed Ring of Experience – doubles all experience gained by user, halves all experience lost by user, and halves all experience gained by enemies. Also doubles all damage received by user.
"Well, that explains a few things." You say to yourself. No wonder you got so little experience. It also explains why he tried to flee and why he died so quickly. Unfortunately the ring is cursed and cannot be removed without special measures – which you don't have.
Next you check his longsword, shield and armor:
Cursed Steel Longsword – decreases to-hit chance by 25%...
Crap! You don't even bother reading the rest of the longsword's info.
Cursed Steel Buckler – reduces block chance by 25%...
Well, fuck. Just how many cursed items does this guy have?
Studded Leather Armor – common-quality leather armor. Cheap but reliable.
Well, at least it's not cursed. But it's not really worth taking either. The rest of his armor is of the same unimpressive quality, much to your disappointment.
Next you find the guy's money pouch. Inside you discover 100 Gold coins and a small ruby, probably worth around 10 more coins. Not much, but you decide to be 'nice' and "lighten the guy's load".
You move on to the items he is holding. First are 2 scrolls of Charm Person. "Those might come in handy." You smile as you add them to your own inventory. Next are two potions. One is a regular Minor Healing Potion – the cheapest and least useful healing item in the game. The other one... "A Futa Potion? What does a man need this for?" You have seen such potions before. Female "heroines" sometimes use them to temporarily grow a cock. You have had to suck cocks obtained in this manner and know that they are no different from regular ones. But as far as you know the potion has no effect on men, since they already have a cock.
The last thing of interest the dead man owns is a Shard of Ice Crystal – a rare material used in the crafting of rare and powerful equipment. It's not of much use to you, but you'll get quite a bit of gold if you sell it... or you can keep it and collect more materials so that you can get something crafted for you in the future. Either way you'll be keeping the shard a secret, or else the "heroes" will definitely try to steal it from you.
Having finished your search you sigh in disappointment. "That's it? I was hoping for at least a few more valuables..."
You briefly consider what to do next. You still have that skill choice waiting for you – maybe you should take care of it now... Or you could leave the library and go somewhere else. You can hear the sounds of fighting coming from the outside, but none are close to where you are.
What do you do?
Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
