Chapter 20 by Fever Dreamer Fever Dreamer

What does Vicky ask Leon?

About his life currently

"So how have you been?" asked Vicky, realising as she said it that it was a dumb question.

Leon chuckled regardless, raising a hand gingerly and waggling it sideways.

Comme ci, comme ça. The idea of peaceful retirement is nice, but in practice can be very dull. I miss the days when I could stand and roar and sing and love.” Leon closed his eyes and tipped his head back, breathing deeply. “And smell the splendour of life. Now, I have wealth but no strength to enjoy it.”

“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that,” said Vicky, not knowing what else to say.

“It is not all bad,” Leon said with a smile. “I am doing better than most. Much better. And Helena is a truly remarkable woman: I could ask for none better if I had a thousand years.”

The pair of them sat in silence, watching the sun coast lazily towards the horizon.

With nothing else to say, Vicky asked, “Any regrets?”

“Mm?” Leon said, as though he had been thinking about something else.

“Are you worried? Like, about what might come next?”

Leon’s smile widened. “Absolutely not. I’m rather looking forward to it. **** is not a bad thing; it is simply something that happens. Both of us - yes, even you - have lived lives longer and fuller than billions of others could have dreamed of. We should be thankful for what we were fortunate enough to have and not dwell on the end.”

Vicky reflected on the wisdom of this until the sky dimmed, and eventually Helena came out to meet them.

“We’ll be serving dinner shortly,” she said, taking Leon’s chair by the handled. “What have you two been talking about?”

“Oh, just the future,” said Leon with a sad smile. “Just the future.”

Night falls on the estate
