“Nothing, really,” Vicky admitted. “I mean, I’ve finished college but I’m not sure what to do with myself now. I could start a career, but I don’t know what in.”

Leon smiled reassuringly. “You don’t have to decide straight away. You’re young: You’ve got your whole life ahead of you. Who knows; you may end up choosing a path no-one expects.”

“I guess,” Vicky said, leaning back in her chair. It was hard enough thinking about these things on her own. Having to talk about them with someone she hadn’t seen in years was tough, but it felt good to get it off her chest.

“And what about your young man?” Leon asked. “He seems very taken with you.”

“He’s a gentleman,” Vicky said with a smile. “I think he’d be a little relieved if I were to settle down and rely on him, but he’d be just as happy to see my chase me dreams, if I could just figure out what they were.”

Leon nodded his approval. “And Liz? She should be finishing school soon, yes?”

“Just finished,” Vicky confirmed. “But she’s still just a kid. I’m going to have a tough time getting her to go to college or get a job, but if she’s going to make it in the real world, that’s what she’ll need to do.”

Leon nodded again. “This is the new age. Women, men, everyone works for a living. Things were different back in my day, but for the most part, I’m happy with the way things have changed.”

It occurred to Vicky that in the same way Leon knew very little about her, she’d never actually taken the time to learn about him.
