Chapter 5

How do you respond?
It's complicated
"Well..." You squirm under her gaze, "I wouldn't exactly say we were just friends, but we never did any of the things that a boyfriend and girlfriend would do. We never even kissed."
Her expression stiffens and you can tell that you didn't say the right thing, "And what do you mean by that? That you weren't exactly just friends? I thought I was your first girlfriend."
Clearly she didn't hear anything past that. Olivia was always a bit...possessive of you. Emily, Dean's girlfriend is about the only girl that she can tolerate near you for extended periods of time and that's mostly because she hasn't shown much interest in you. Hoping to clear it up, you try and clarify, "No, look. You are my first girlfriend. Natalie and I never dated. We were just together a lot and-"
She cuts you off, "Whatever. Just remember that you're my boyfriend. Don't fuck it up!" She storms into the ladie's room leaving you in the hall confused as to what just happened.
You're still bewildered as you collect your lunch and go to the cafeteria. Arriving there, you spot out Dean and Emily sitting on their own where your little group of friends typically sit. Emily Bronzebach is a petite girl with short black hair. Despite having had her eighteenth birthday over the summer, she could easily pass for a freshman or sophomore. However, despite her appearance she is definitely not a cute innocent girl. She is very much a party girl and all of the vices that go along with that: Sex, ****, booze. Calling her a slut would be a bit of an exaggeration. She won't sleep with just anyone. You either have to catch her eye, or really work for it. Dean and her sort of have a bit of an open relationship. They tolerate each others occasional one night stands if they happen. Despite this, Emily has yet to attempt anything with you. Probably due to Olivia's protective personality coupled with the fact that you don't really go to that many parties.
You sit and start eating and Emily grins at you, "So John, Olivia was really determined for you to have a birthday party. Is she planning on something naughty?"
You feel your face get hot, "I...uh...Don't know. She's really not happy with this whole situation with Miss. Goldwater."
Dean shrugs "Well, do you blame her? You've been dating her for like a year and she feels threatened by girls just looking at you the wrong way. How do you think she feels about a girl suddenly showing up that was very close to you and that she's never met?I think you're gonna find that she's going to try hard for your attention."
"...Or she'll just break up with you." Emily adds.
"Maybe, I'm just already tired of this drama and it's only the first day of school." You see Olivia enter the cafeteria which marks the segway into more normal conversations for you and your friends.
The rest of the day passes without incident and it isn't long before you say goodbye to your friends and girlfriend and go home. You live alone with your mother. Your parents divorced when you were really young and while he pays child support, you haven't ever seen him since. Your older sister is nineteen and has just gone off to college. This leaves just you and mom. Entering your home, you find it eerily silent. Of course it is, since your mom doesn't get home for another couple of hours. So for you, it sounds like a great chance to sit on the sofa and play some video games before you start your homework.
