Chapter 48 by Cantalope Cantalope

Should you stay or should you go?

Stay, target the path

It was too risky. This way you could get entrenched and be ready for a group of explorers. The main road would have foot traffic all day. In your newly weakened form even with your minions it would be a struggle to keep up with them all. You reach out with your senses, clustering your tendrils on and around the path while you order over passing minions.

In the hours that followed the spiders set up an impressive canopy of webbing, darkening the path and making it appear ominous and foreboding: the perfect hero trap. Your tendrils thickened the path at the point nearest you, opening tiny white flowers that almost seemed to fluoresce in the gloom. As the sun rose and the spiders retreated to their webs to rest, you were quite impressed with the final result. To complete the look you wound yourself around the nearby trees, framing the path with your dense leaves and giving it an almost cavelike appearance.

The sun broke through the clouds shortly before noon and you shivered as your mana counter topped out once again. Miera seemed determined to meditate her problems away so you left her to her slumber, sucking out her mana on the hour just to be sure. As the "mana-migraine" started to set in you decided to put your new abilities to the test. Toxic Pollen. You blanketed the path in a thick cloud of **** yellow dust, causing several decorative birds to keel over as their single hit point was damaged. Oh yes, I think this will work splendidly. The cost is impressive and the excessive mana quickly dissipates, leaving you feeling normal for the first time in days. You unfortunately couldn't use Absorb and Toxic Pollen at the same time but you suppose that would be asking too much. For now, this would be perfect.

Sometime after midnight, as the spiders did their rounds, you grew concerned with Miera. She'd been unresponsive all day and, to be perfectly honest, you were getting antsy. Rather like the lull after an adrenaline rush, the calm after days of trying to stay alive felt unnatural. You needed to do something, but you'd settle for doing someone. Lifting the insensate witch before you, you trail your delicate tendrils over her skin. Besides, you still needed to try Sweet Nectar.

What now?
